A common Narrative among people that are either too young to remember or were not born is that Nintendo ruled supreme in all of the 90s.
Not true at all, Sega ate into Nintendo's market share and it was not until DKC was released that Nintendo caught up. Sega had apple like
aggressive marketing campaign and better pop culture awareness. Sega was seen as the COOL ADULT MATURE system. It's not to say
no one had a SNES, but.......... I noticed everyone jumping onto the SNES ship once DKC was released including me. But up until then
Sega Genesis ruled the world. The only exception that can be made is Game boy was obv more popular then Game Gear, but I am talking
more about home console versions. Sega has a lot of IP that they never made new games for, with Nintendo u had Zelda, Metroid etc etc
so those brands are constantly in the minds of gamers alike.

Take a movie like Independence Day, what was Will Smith's child playing in it ? A Sega !
Seinfeld had tons of Sega spotting in it's episodes, Sonic 3 and Sonic Spinball are seen at
Jerry's corner video store. Bart Simpson and Mill house are seeing playing a Sega Gensises
in many early seasons as well.

Sonic was more recognizable to US children than Mickey Mouse or Abraham Lincoln according to a study in the 90s

100 percent agree. Genesis was the defining system of the early 90s

And the nes was on its way out in the first half of 1991 while the genesis was replacing it. 1989-1990 was the last year of when Nintendo was truly king until the mid 90s. Power glove hype/wizard movie was the last big nes hype.

In 1991 snes barely had any games. 1992 more but still not that much. 1993 is when snes was starting to really take off but it would peak a bit later.

This is probably one reason why so many held on to their nes systems as second consoles for so long.

That early Sega hype was UNREAL,Sega just felt better, even the controller felt better. Sonic 2 pack in with Sega was my first system.

Yeah sega still owned nintendo in 1993 and 1994 to some degree for sure, but the snes was def starting to pick up and get big 1993 for a number of reasons. Sega had more arcade style games way more variety and releases and more mature vibes for sure.

Honestly sega cd and 32x were badass for the time. Its just seems like a really popular thing to hate on the Internet. I think the nes is iconic and awesome console but a bit overpraised especially in the 2010s.
