What is the weirdest year of the 90s in your opinion ? I will give u mine, 1998, that whole year had a weird vibe to it. Metal Gear Solid was cool, Banjo Kazooie was cool as well, who can forget when ZELDA 64 dropped and it was SOLD OUT at all the Blockbuster Video locations ?
For TV shows, the whole landscape seemed confused on what it wanted to be, MTV LIVE changed it's name to TRL, ABc TGIF went thru its "weird era" where it was trying to bring back the success of Full House. Pokemon started getting a big buzz at the end of this year in syndication. Power Rangers actually was booming in popularity again thanks to the IN SPACE season which did RECORD ratings for Fox Kids. Boy meets world had a weird season this year as well. Fashion was still testing the waters. The new IMAC had come out in various colors and looked pretty cool. Seinfeld, Family Matters also ended their run. Game boy color came out and I thought it was sucked and NOT impressed at all lol crappy old tech for it's time.
When I think of 1998 I just think of the off weird vibe, these videos best describe it.
It was the 1997 EXPANSION PACK vibe, like some kind of EXTRA add on was added to form 1998I think slashpop knows what I am talking about as he was there as well It is scary to imagine but SEINFELD (the final season) existed in the same year Britney Spears came out with her first Music Video. As well as POKEMON !

1996 had trouble deciding what it wanted to be. The grunge movement was on its very last legs and already veering towards different influences, OutKast's "Elevators (Me & You)" made the top 20 thanks to the duo's appearance at the Olympics, and the early millennial wave of pop was just starting in Europe and Australasia despite pop being virtually nonexistent in America at the time. Gaming that year was caught between 3D titles like Super Mario 64 and Tomb Raider and 2D games like Donkey Kong Country 3 and Kirby Super Star. The WB era of television was just starting, but you also had The Simpsons and Seinfeld in the twilight of their primes. Anime was becoming more common via syndication, but still hadn't had its major stateside break yet. In all sorts of ways, 1996 was dominated by major new trends that hadn't quite come fully into their own yet.

Once the Smashing Pumpkins episode of The Simpsons aired that year I knew it was over for grunge as the whole episode was bashing the movement and Gen Xers. The Teen witch trend came out in 96, then u started seeing Buffy, Sabrina etc etc it was crazy but fun.

From what I've heard, 1998 feels weird as its like in between the Core/Late 90s and Y2K Era (The Second Part of it as some of you may consider)... Lots of Core 90s things are fading into the fog while culture doesn't feel 100% Y2K yet...

In the late 90s Playstation was way more popular then n64 so I didn't really care about it that much, I had both systems and I indeed rented Zelda 64 the gold cart at Blockbusters and thought it was pretty damn good but I was not blown away by it. Teen pop was already taking off the year before with Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys 24/7 on Mtv so when Britney came out it was really nothing new. It was around November/Decemember when she started getting pushed like crazy is when people were blown away. It was kind of like when Gaga came out in late 08 people were like oh cool this is new but didn't really become a force until early 2009. That is kind how it was with Britney, 1999 is when she was being pushed like crazy on MTV, Radio, magazine ads, Radio drops, backpacks etc etc

Also in 98 you had Seinfeld's last season and they talked about the early 2000s in it, I am serious ! in 1998 y2k was very much on peoples minds

But when Seinfeld ended, that was one of the signs that the Core 90s were quickly coming to an end, along with music seeming less Core/Late 90s during the summer... It's hard to say when did the Late Core 90s or 1st Wave Y2K era really end, but 1998 definitely is a weird year for sure...

I also heard that Late 1998 is also quite a period in gaming, despite Gameboy color not looking like a huge release, there was Ocarina of time like I mentioned earlier, along with other monumental releases like Metal Gear Solid, Half Life, and Dance Dance Revolution! What were your thoughts on the other games I mentioned?

What were your thoughts on the other games I mentioned? Game boy color was terrible offered nothing new and was a stop gap until GBA came out. I loved Metal Gear Solid and DDR was fun to play at arcades. The only n64 game that I really enjoyed that year was Banjo Kazooie as it was spin off of Donkey Kong Country series. Tomb Raider 3 was awesome. Yeah even late 1998 felt weird. in 1998 tv shows resorted to doing desperate things for ratings as I posted the TGIF ones.
