The Shiny Suit Rap era is an era that started in 1997 following the death of Tupac and was spearheaded a few weeks before Biggie Died. The face behind the movement was Diddy and his Bad Boy records label. During this time ALL music videos had a light hearted vibes and featured SHINY suits. Most of these videos were also directed by Hype Williams and featured Fish eye lens.

I’ve always wondered if there was ever a store that sold those back then.

I’ve always wondered if there was ever a store that sold those back then. lolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll I do remember seeing a few people in shiney fubu clothing in public but they were actually hard to come by I guess. I wasn’t into hip hop but just curious about those suits, couldn’t find them at any store back then...

Who started it exactly ? that came later I think, Puff started it the first video that dropped with Biggie in 97 that had the shiny suits. Hype Williams also added to it, he directed Missy's can't stand the rain's video which had the shiny suit fish eye lens and motif, Puff started it then people like Missy and Will Smith just used the aesthetic to the point where it became the standard for rap videos. I remember seeing this video thinking it was so futuristic in fall 97 Most shiny suit videos had Mase in it

My favorite from this era:
I was just up early one morning in 2002 and randomly flipped to MTV2 and saw this music video. It left an indelible impression on me, but I didn't find the actual song again until 15 years later.

Didn’t busta rhymes start this video and shiny suit thing in late 96? Who started it exactly ? Well, not really. There were some precursors like LL Cool J's Loungin, and the fact that Tupac's death was the start of the transition from Gangsta rap to Shiny suit, although Gangsta rap didn't completely die until 1997 when there were no more G-funk sounds aside from Biggie's Hypnotize.

I actually like the shiny suit rap era better then the Gangsta rap G funk era because of the more catchy hooks. in 1996 u also had videos like this, happens to sound like a Backstreet boys song. It was clear as day where music and music videos were headed.
