2014/2015 and 2016/2017 felt so different from each other. Sept 2, 2020 17:17:11 GMT 10

I'm amazed on how both the 2014/15 and 2016/17 school years are so distinct from each other despite being 2 years apart. I feel like at this moment, our retrospective outlook of the 2010s have certainly altered because I remember around 2017 that it felt mostly the same as 2014 pop culture wise.

2014-2015:
-No one knew Trump will run for president until June 2015.
-Pop culture leaned millennial.
-Hipsters were dominating.
-Vine was a must-have
-Teens kept on using Kik, Facebook, and Skype.
-Snapchat didn't have filters
-Discord doesn't exist until May 2015.
-Instagram had the old layout.
-Music was overwhelmingly pop.
-Trap was not the most popular genre and it sounded different then.

2016-2017:
-Trump won the presidency
-Pop culture began to lean Gen Z.
-Hipsters declined while athleisure took over.
-Vine died in January 2017.
-Kik, Facebook, and Skype were no longer cool.
-Snapchat had plenty of filters.
-Discord started to become widespread.
-Instagram transformed into the current look.
-Dancehall and Future Bass were the sound of pop music.
-Trap and mumble rap started to dominate the charts.

In late 2014/2015 I felt like stereotypical 2010s hipster was just starting to lose some popularity and starting to adopt a more subdued look with offshoots like yuccie taking off and becoming more visible. I think gen z did have some presence and a lot of the roots of the alt right subculture and trump support were starting to taking shape. You can say sept 14 to summer 2015 is one period

Still though, you saw more hipsters in late 2014-mid 2015 than in late 2016-mid 2017.

I agree, the last time I saw any hipsters was in Mid 2017...

Yeah, hipster fashion completely faded away by 2018 IMO. I think its peak was from 2011-2014, then it started declining in late 2015. Late 2010's fashion was more like a 90's throwback type.

In bigger cities the hipster thing was declining by late 2014 by early to mid 2015 it was even more obvious and you didn’t have as many flashy hipsters as well. Things like normcore, yuccie and subdued versions of it were already a visible thing.

Thing is hipster was already there in

2004-2006 Hipster is identifiable thing crossed with indie, geek, scenester and metrosexual styles

late 2005 to late 2006 Hipster slowly becomes mainstream, beards become a thing

2008: hipster becomes cliche and a few varieties of it are recognizable

2009 : 2010s hipster looks and identity are fully established and popular

2010-11 : Hipster influence is everywhere and it is deeply tied to early 2010s culture

2011/2012 to mid 2014: Peak and highest popularity of modern hipster. With slight style modification and increase in popularity every year.

Late 2014-2015: Hipster is dying, rise of subdued hipster looks, yuccie, and normcore.

Late 2015-mid 2018: Final gasp of whatever subdued hipster and mutations with other styles.

Late 2018-? Last traces of hipster style.

I guess it depends on where you live? I was a kid then but I don’t remember hearing the word hipster till like 2010. It was probably better known by 20-somethings in big cities than 10 year olds in the Midwest. I guess it wasn’t till the early 2010s till it truly took over mainstream teenage culture.
