I agree that late 2018 was the start of pure late 2010s culture. I feel like late 2016 - mid 2018 was like a dying period of the core 2010s. I do believe as of right now, we are slowly transitioning to early 20s culture, we will know the more further we go. The US election in November will be the cherry on top depending on which candidate will win. I think in Late 2020, we will see the first signs of Early 2020s culture and the start of the transition, and we might be deep into Early 2020s culture by Mid/Late 2021. Just like in 2000, you saw the first signs of Early 2000s culture in Late 2000, and the Y2K era was done by Mid 2001. Whelp, seems like I was right. Biden winning the election, Cyberpunk 2077, and 9th Gen consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X is the start of early 2020s culture.

Early-Mid 2020 still seemed like the Late 2010s culturally, regardless of the pandemic.

I think your answer to this question largely depends on if you are an introvert or an extravert.
2020 is the year of the introvert and your life is much less likely to have experienced significant change this year compared to extraverts. If you are a social person at all and enjoy experiences, there's no comparing 2020 to anything that has come before.

2019 or late 2018 at the earliest. Not 2017 tho. That's really stretching it.

Maybe this felt true a few months ago, but definitely not anymore. The thing is changes are happening all the time and it could take a while for people to realize what's new and here to stay and what is outdated and on its way out. I feel comfortable using March 2020 as the start date of the early 2020s, although the entire year has been changeful.

How much has music changed this year in your opinion? Not much tbh. I haven't really paid attention to much if any music this year. I guess, maybe when it comes to rap songs, it is still the same tbh, but I guess people like Pop Smoke are getting more recognition (albeit posthumous). Mumble Rap is still the same I guess but maybe emo rap is dying out now, but not fully dead. IDK 🤷🏿♂️

I agree. 2020 feels identical or a continuation of late 2018-2019, besides COVID. 2017 is pushing it cuz early 2017 felt core 2010s & was the last gasp of the mid 2010s. I think the core 2010s were dead by mid or late 2017. Core 2010s influence lingered throughout 2017 & early-mid 2018. Core 2010s influences were gone by late 2018. IMO 2019 is the peak of the late 2010s. There were minor signs of early 2020s influences in late 2018 with the prevalence of AirPods, Billie Eilish, maybe Fortnite & TikTok emerging.

Soundcloud/emo/punk rap rose to prominence in 2016, peaked in 2017 and early 2018, lingered on in mid-late 2018, and was dead by 2019.
In 2020, that Lil Pump, 6ix9ine, Trippie Red, etc. vibe is gone in mainstream hip hop, and it's what I consider to be one of the main factors of the Late 2010s. So there's one reason why 2020 and definitely 2021-2023 will not feel like the same era as 2016/17-2019.

EDM is also completely dead in 2020. While it's been a declining force since the mid '10s, it had managed to hang on through 2019.
2020 is still the most changeful year of my lifetime regardless if music more or less stayed the same this year. Nearly every aspect of my life was turned completely upside down by the Covid pandemic. I don't see how so many people could think this year was no different from 2017-19 unless your entire perception of culture centers around music, gaming, and Internet culture without much consideration given to anything else.

I think this is like when we were on inthe00s in 2015/2016 and people would say things like "nothing has changed since late 2008" only because Taylor Swift, Drake, Justin Bieber etc. were still popular lol.

Oh I remember how hyped "late 2018" was for the beginning of 2020s culture and transitional culture on Inthe00s.
So much for that.

No, the thing some people don't understand is that there is way more to a year than music, or what brand of pants someone is wearing, when people look back at the early 2020s things like the coronavirus, the inauguration of Joe Biden and the Uk leaving the European union will matter far more than trap, and Tiktok remaining popular.
