Is this song from Shaggy sound more 90s or early 2000s? It was a hit in early 2001.

It sounds a lot more '90s to me stylistically because of its melodic style and its bouncy beat. Despite being the biggest pop-reggae song of its day, the genre changed dramatically soon afterwards with the advent of dancehall musicians like Beenie Man and Sean Paul. Shaggy was also popular in the '90s but didn't find much success after the Hot Shot album, which produced "It Wasn't Me" and "Angel".

Pop reggae was indeed a HUGE thing in the '90s and this doesn't sound too far off from songs like "Here Comes the Hotstepper" or Shaggy's actual own 90s material.

It has 90s vocal style but the beat and overall music vibe is overwhelmingly late y2k/early 2000s.

Can’t we all just agree that the year 2000 was its own damn thing, neither fully ‘90s or ‘00s?

I don't think this is a 90s or 00s sounding song. This is a Y2K style song like loosebolt said above. While it does have elements of the reggae stuff from the mid 90s, the song has this Y2K bubblegum cheese written all over it, I couldn't imagine coming out of the mid 90s unless you're in Europe.

Yeah I barely see anything 90s about this song other than something vague about the vocals . I can’t even imagine this song being released in 1998 or 1999. To me it has late very strong transitional early 00s bubblegum pop feel, maybe late y2k at most.

Sounds pretty 90s, but not surprised that it came out in the early 2000s.
