We are currently in the beginning of the 4th quarter of 2020. Which song that is out right now will the music industry latch onto for the next couple of years? A song that is unique to this year and not likely to be popular in any year of the 2010s besides 2019? Now I MIGHT be wrong about this but these are my contenders for most likely sound of the early 2020s.

"Watermelon Sugar" was first released as a promo single in November 2019 tho.
"Mood" is probably the one that stands out the most from the late 2010s, an upbeat electric guitar-led trap tune in contrast to all the gritty, moody trap songs of 2017-2019 (even if they are still plenty of those popular nowadays like "Rockstar").

Well yeah, Watermelon Sugar was released in 2019 but it wouldn’t be a hit in 2018 since it was mandatory to have trap beats, dembows, feature a rapper, and have weird vocal samples in EDM to be successful that year. I also think the success of Supalonely will gain an interest of the bedroom pop genre in the coming future.

I couldn't imagine a pop-rock/Trap mash-up song like this being released during the Late 2010s. There seems to be something of an emerging trend at the moment of pop-rock/punk influences being incorporated into Trap songs, so I can't help but wonder if this type of sound will eventually be fleshed out into its own sub-genre in the next couple of years.

I think Rockstar is part of a new trend in hip hop where it has quick melodies and laidback flows. Same thing with this one. I really like this new trend in trap.

I posted this back on the crappy dusty forum in 2019 that Lil Uzi and the whole pop punk vibes in Trap Music would eventually lead to Pop Punk's comeback and we are seeing it now with MGK turning it a pop punk singer, don't be surprised if u see more pop punk acts come back like New Found Glory and Sum 41 and actually make it on the radio again. As far as the new sub-genre of trap/pop rock maybe we will see !

Could this be a new style of reggaeton as well?

Could this be a new style of reggaeton as well? Sounds super generic to me. This however is cool and taking reggaeton to whole new lanscapes:

At this point, I STILL don't have an actual clue. Almost every popular song I've heard either sounds like the late 2010s trap/EDM pop or are throwbacks/revivals. I think pop culture has gotten too fragmented, and I really haven't heard anything new and exciting that's gonna be the next big thing yet.

Only real difference is that 2020 trap music sounds more "bouncy" and has more melodic vocals than 2016-2018 trap music thanks to DaBaby's influence in 2019.
