I have said this story before and I will bring it up again, so for the 2000-2001 school year I was placed in a 7th grade Bad Girls school 2 towns away, they told me when I finish this 7th grade bad girls school (which felt like a prison btw) I can resume 8th grade at my NORMAL school where I knew everyone, so can you imagine every day of the 2000-2001 school year was me counting down to 8th grade for the 2001-2002 school year, you have no idea how much of an upgrade it was LOL Music, Games, TV etc etc and......when I came back for 8th grade everyone hit puberty and sounded different. I don't care what anyone says, the 2000-2001 school year was STALE AF, DRY like Canada dry soda. Most of my time was spent roaming the halls bored out of my damn mind to past time, at one point I left class and walked to Toys R us and chilled there for 2 hours because of how bored I was. That school was big so sometimes I would just walk into random classes and chill for 15 min... I am serious it was THAT boring... When I see things like Game boy color or the Shrek book covers they were giving out I just remind myself of that time where I was bored out of my mind. The movies of Summer 2001 were amazing and held me over but TV in Summer 2001......omg could Cartoon Network play anymore Dragon Ball Z Reruns...... MTV with its WWF Tough Enough reruns every 30 min..............it seemed like every channel ran out of episodes to show or something. I went crazy. It was obvious they were holding back for the fall season. When I think of mid 2000 to mid 2001 I think the most iconic thing are scooters, hawain shirts, "the real slim shady" just really bad TRL dance party music, cheesy limp bizkit videos and pretty much tons of things from the Y2K era were getting worse. I think school/university culture was better in the 90s and the Y2k era to some extent and probably the 2010s. I think there was some part of the 2000s that promoted fakeness and emphasis on popularity, that the 90s and the current era didn't have in the same way. Razr Scooters the most infamous FAD of the 2000-2001 school year, it's funny how fast that went out of the style as soon as the next fall came LMAO Yeah things had a feeling of VERY LONG IN THE TOOTH during 2000-2001 school year, things from y2k were def getting worse and I am glad they ended as the months went on. It was like y2k was a parody of itself by then, remember The WB had all these teen pop reality shows lmao IT legit became a parody of itself by summer

2000 and pre-9/11 2001 just felt like 1999 but, much more boring and took away a lot of the fun that 1999 had going for it, if that makes sense? Yes exactly it lacked soul and there something really manufactured about that year, almost in a 2005-2006 kind of way, and I think it gets lumped up with Y2k era but has more more in common with the early 2000s, even the rest of early 2000s felt like improved versions of 2000-2001 period. When I think of 2000-2001 I think of tacky nike shoes, frat boys being a cool thing, Eminem wannabes, who let the dogs out, generic PlayStation and PC games and over saturation and insane repetition of mediocre pop, nu metal, r&b and electronica. So whatever was semi cringe in 1998 to early 2000 just got multiplied and became super mainstream by mid 2000-mid 2001. There are definitely some things are are good or okay about then it’s not black and white but i just think we forget some of the year. A big reason why 2000 - 01 is lumped with 1999 is because, it was before 9/11 (which was the most definitive tragic event of the 2000s and politically shaped the whole decade). Hip hop definitely had popularity in 2000 but, it really lacked the complete dominance it had from 2002 - 2007 in the mainstream (Hip hop's popularity in 2000 was more on par with 1999 still). Lmao, atleast the cringe stuff in 1999 was actually fun and had a bit of a corny charm to it, on the otherhand, the cringy stuff from the early 2000s was well... just cringe and unintentionally funny.

True. I get what you mean by why its lumped with 99/00 and the pre 9/11 aspect but I still think 2000-2001 was leaning more towards the early 2000s. Here are some singles from then II hope they never repeat these songs EVER again:

Here are some singles from then II hope they never repeat these songs EVER again: Those songs have just given me terrible flashbacks haha. 'The Real Slim Shady' was not too bad when I first heard it but, MTV absolutely overplayed it. 'Who Let the Dogs Out' was just downright annoying. 'Follow Me' and 'Thank You' were boring and pretty much just elevator music, went into one ear and then out the other. I can't stand anything from Limp Bizkit, even as a kid I couldn't stand Fred Durst. 'Thong Song' was really annoying and overplayed but, my mom used to sing the main chorus really loudly which has actually made me nostalgic over a terrible song lol. The song I hate the most in that list is definitely 'Butterfly', it was terrible and overplayed, as a kid I hated it and I always tore it to shreds everytime I heard it, I hated the sound of it (especially that sample) and the lyrics are really cheesy and sorta creepy? 'Butterfly' was part of that 'tough guys need love too' trend of the early 2000s which I found extremely cringe worthy (remember Ja Rule?).

A great song, and pretty much better than anything from 1999 I've heard Dude this song was played 24/7 all and then time, it was like LITERALLY noise pollution, and then reused in eminem song called stan AT THE SAME TIME which was ALSO played ALL THE TIME for almost 2 years AT THE SAME TIME! I'm not a HUGE fan of 1999 or anything but I'd take. Whatever semi decent pop, electronica, rock, metal/industrial/nu-metal from that year over the majority of stuff from 2000-2001 period.

Agreed, 1999 definitely wasn't a good year for music but, I'd take it over most of the 2000s years (including 2000-01). IMHO, I think 2005 - 2006 was easily the worst part of the 2000s musically speaking. The worst song from the mid 2000s that I can currently think of is definitely that Laffy Taffy song. For the 1990s, the worst years were probably 1990 and 1999 but, its best years were without a doubt 1992 - 1996. Music aside, my favorite 2000s years in general were definitely 2004 (a huge upgrade in my personal life compared to the early 2000s and generally a very solid year for pop culture) and 2007 (good pop culture and personal life).

I couldn't agree more. late 1998 to early 2000, still had significant hits by groups like Nine Inch Nails, Primus, Rob Zombie, Slayer, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Garbage etc that seemed to be the very last traces of the mid to late 90s rock culture , with some exceptions like marilyn manson and few groups in 2000-2001, most was reduced to pure sellout bubblegum or out of the mainstream by 2000-2001. Plus even a lot of the cringey pop music feels purer and decent in 1998-1999 and to some extent 99/00. Heck most of the stuff in woodstock 99 seems okay. 2001/2002 to 2004, heck even early 2005 at the very most, mainstream rock music massively improved. 2002, 2004 and 2007-2008 were definitely major positive upswings in overall pop culture and quality of stuff released and atmosphere. 1999 still some had decent and creative stuff: Example of decent hip hop: Example of decent Nu metal: Example of decent post grunge:

Very true a shit time for PS2, PS1, N64 and Dreamcast combined. Oh and gameboy color was on its way out, gameboy advanced barely had any games and Pokemania was beyond dead.
