by Fall 1997 it was ps1 country, I am trying to remember my mindset back that but I asked for ps1 before getting a n64 later that year and I must of asked for ps1 first because it was the superior machine in my mind. Those FF7 commercials even tho fraudulent lol Sold me on getting the system. Also the demo disc in stores made it look better it was just bad ass The PS1 just seemed like the 'cooler' system too. Using cartridges was one of Nintendo's biggest mistakes, I heard you would need like 21 N64 cartridges to store Final Fantasy VII, and that would cost roughly $1,260 (if my maths serves me right lol). Yuppp, when I think back on n64 I think of Mario 64 when I first played it, how awesome Star Fox was playing it, The summer Zelda 64 and Banjo Kazooie came out and thats it literally LMAO compared to my memories with ps1 - Seeing a ps1 kiosk for the first time - Seeing FF7 commercials and playing FF7 - Playing Tekken 2 for the first time - Playing Tekken 3 for the first time - The hype of Resident Evil 2 - the hype of Oddworld - The hype of Tomb Raider 2 - Hype of Crash ads with the Mega Phone - Megaman Legends ( and n64 not getting it til 2000 LMAO) - Parappa the Rapper - Jet Moto battles - Tony Hawk 2 (lmao n64 only had 60 seconds of the song and then it looped) I could go on but u get the picture, I had more high level memories with ps1 then n64, I hated n64 blurry graphics 2 btw

Personally I wish Sega Saturn and N64 continued to be the best of the best like it was in the first half of the 1990s. But I do think Sega Saturn, PC, N64 and Playstation all had something to offer at the same time in late 1996- early 2000. I see it more like you needed to have at least 2 systems and a handheld to fully experience the era since so many systems had great things to offer at the same time. Even if the PS1 had kicked off in late 96, I think N64 had the strongest appeal and wow factor ever in 1996-1997 just because of the hype and 3d graphics and all the buzz, I would say that was probably peak N64, it had this untouchable out of this world factor that slowly expired across late 1997 to mid 1998. Playstation seemed better in terms having more options of really good games, cost, choice and variety during 1997-1998 but N64 still had some advantages like golden eye, banjo kaazoie and f zero x, you really couldn't get of that quality anywhere else, so I don't really see it as that bad of a system Late 1998 to Late 2000 was like last period before the N64 hit the dust. We were kind of forced into accepting N64 games even if you knew the weren't the greatest at the time. Overall It was very short lived era. I remember nes games still coming out in 1993-1994! I do think N64 gets bashed a lot, a lot of those games hold up. I kind of prefer the cartridge look. Summer 1999 was in the midst of having that exciting vibe of big n64 games everyone was talking about, checking out friends or renting at block buster.

Donkey Kong Country 4 AKA Donkey Kong 64 was such a let down compared to 1 & 2 I know but I’ll still take that over that horrible trauma and denial of having an n64 in 2001 and pretending it’s a really good system.

Buying both consoles alone is going to be like 80+ dollars and they won't look very good when connected to modern televisions.

Nintendo 64 especially is crazy expensive to collect for, the prices have gotten so ridiculous. The big reason why I gave up on game collecting is because, I got all the games I really want and the prices have increased so much in the past 8 years. Back in like 1999/2000ish, NES games commonly went for a few dollars (not kidding!).

Yeah I remember since I started recollecting nes and snes games in 1999 you could get most games for $1.99-$10.00 while a few games were $15-$30. I’m remembering both pawn shops where the games where the games were usually $5 and under and used game sections in bigger stores that were a little pricier even then. Snes games would go for a bit more. Blame the current system on the resellers and shady collectors ruining the collector market and artificially inflating the games by posting games for twice the price on eBay during the mid to late 2010s. Hipsters and big YouTubers ex AVGN taking about old games help contribute to this. That’s why it’s literally impossible to get certain sega Saturn and Dreamcast games. Like who is going to pay $300 or something dollars for conquers bad fur day for the n64 it went overnight from being a medium cost game to that.

It's absolutely ridiculous, I've seen Mario Kart 64 go for $80? Luckily, most of my games from the 5th gen onwards was originally mine anyway (I take good care of my stuff). I originally started collecting NES, SNES and Genesis games because, I was (and still am) a huge fan of the AVGN and that sparked my interest in the hobby. I do remember collecting a few games in the early 2000s too but, it wasn't too much of a hobby yet. Overall, those resellers completely ruined the hobby for me. It used to be quite fun collecting retro games until the price started skyrocketing in 2012 (after slowly rising since 2006).

Do you agree with me that the last months of 1999 and the first 2 months of the year 2000, was the peak of the Y2K Era? I want to say once we entered March of 2000, things started to shift in pop culture and the atmosphere. This was also around the time when the Dot Com Bubble started to burst, and the Y2K vibe was now transitioning into the forthcoming early 2000s. The later half of 2000 did felt very different from the first half of 1999. I have been saying this for a while. 1999 felt more 90s than people give it credit for especially the early part of the year.

Pokemon Stadium 2, Snap, Quake 2, Legend of Zelda OoT and MM, MK trilogy, Bad Fur Day, Mario Party 3 still look decent and have fun aesthetics. It depends on which game.
