A NEW one is coming for 2022 The Japanese console-maker announced that it is working on an animated film adaptation of the Super Mario franchise, adding that “production is moving ahead smoothly.” The film is being produced in help from Universal Studios, with funding coming from both Nintendo and Universal Pictures. Film adaptations of video games have a bit of a stereotype (in that they are stereotypically very, very bad). And it might as well have been the original Super Mario Bros. film that began the trend of terrible video game movies. Super Mario Bros. starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper was released in 1993. It was widely panned at launch for taking far too many liberties with the source material (Hopper leads a group of extra-dimensional dinosaurs disguised as humans hoping to take over the earth) and terrible acting.

I actually liked super Mario the movie when it came out and still kind of do.
I wish they make a sequel similar to it with no cgi.

It makes sense to make another one after how big the Sonic movie was. Hopefully, video game movie adaptions don't become a trend for the 2020s, just like how rebooting 90s disney films in live action was in 2019. Believe it or not, I have actually never seen the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie.

This movie is a guilty pleasure for me tho. I'm interested. I hope it has Bowser Jr., Wario and Daisy in it. Wario and Waluigi should be primary rivals for Mario and Luigi that leads up to Bowser.

There was a super mario bros movie released in 1986 in japan but its animated: here it is with subtitles:
