I just realized that 2011, the peak of dubstep, is now as old as the electronica music of 2002 was back then. The real question what is it closer to in your opinion? The aforementioned 2002 type of stuff or the EDM of 2020.
As examples, here's some pure dubstep from 2011:
Here's a good example of a trance song from 2002, which was the most commercially viable style of electronica back then:
Here's a pretty typical EDM song from 2020, it's future house:

I think that 2011 was also the year when Progressive House started to take shape such as Titanium, Levels, and We Found Love. Honestly, the EDM of 2011 is closer to 2020 since the EDM songs have a big build-ups and then the bass drops. In other words, the structures are more similar to 2020 than 2002.

There's no question that 2002 electronic music was way more techno-oriented or techno-influenced, and there's virtually none of that by the 2010s.

2020. Electronic music back in '02 (and the early 2000s in general) had more nu-disco and house.

This is the only electronic song I know released in 2002 that sounds close to something from 2011.

2020 if you're only considering what has crossed over into the Top 40. Electronic music fell out of favor in the 2000s with only a few songs crossing over like the aforementioned "Heaven" by DJ Sammy. There was a lot more going on around that time though but it was a more niche genre than it became in the 2010s. If you consider the broader genre, I think 2011 was significantly closer to 2002 than 2020. Dubstep had more in common with the techno of the early 2000s than today's EDM.

2002 still had late 1990s vibes in terms of music, movies, fashion, TV, pop culture, way of life, etc. We're talking about electronic music in this thread.
