You yanks have bizarre laws. Legal adults at 18, but still have to wait 3 years just to drink.

I kind of like America's drinking laws. Not because they're logical, but it would feel nice to go to a club and be one of the younger ones there. When it's 18/19, I feel like a middle aged person going to a club at 24. Not that clubs were ever my thing anyway. Weed is going to be legal in Canada next year. The minimum age is going to be 19 in my province, 18 in others. I'm worried because preliminary studies show that smoking under the age of 25 has significant effects on brain development. But there's still not a sufficient amount of research. Personally, I'd like to see it dropped down to 16, if you're gonna trust someone with a car that can kill many people, you can easily trust someone with a beverage that is actually in some ways better for you than soda. I strongly disagree. A lot of 16-25 year olds are reckless drivers as it is, especially males. I can't imagine allowing a 16 year old to drive and also drink. Personally, I really don't care whether the legal drinking age is 18 or 21...but that's probably because I've chosen not to drink alcohol (simply because it doesn't appeal to me) and am over both ages anyway. Overall I agree that while there are 18 year olds who are mature and responsible enough to consume alcohol, there are plenty of others (including people older than 21 years old) who simply aren't. I'm trying to give up alcohol this year. Expensive habit. I used to drink a lot when I was 19/20, but then I noticed myself drinking when I was sad and not for enjoyment, that's when I decided to cut back significantly. Now I'm going to abstain completely.

I'm almost 18 (in May) I know there is a few people my age who have been drinking since year 9 (so the age of 14/15).. Same with Recreational drugs. I don't have an issue with them doing it... Most of my grade seem quite mature and know how to handle it... I think it's a bit silly to have the age of 18 for the legal drinking age when most people are starting at 14/15 but that's just my opinion. I personally don't agree with the legal age being dropped. Although, in any case, if people underage really want to drink alcohol, they're more than likely going to find a way to do it. I guess it just depends on a person's upbringing and the type of people they hang around. There were some people in my year group who started to drink when they were only 14/15 as well.

Allowing a 16 year old to drive and drink legally can still kill them. It's called drinking and driving.

If an 18 year old can fight for their own country, they can have damn beer!
Yes, an 18 year old is just as much as an adult as a 21 year old.

Even though it would look odd to since I'm an American, I also agree that you should be able drink at 18. In fact, in my state (Washington) people are trying to pass a bill that will make you wait until you're 21 to buy CIGARETTS. Its absolutely ridiculous.

It should remain at 18 (says she who has been drinking since the age of 12!).

She's actually right. Sure, people over 16 can still drink and drive, but a 16-year-old is new to driving so they're obviously going to be a lot more at risk of crashing if they're drunk.

I don't know what place you from but where I live drinking and driving is ILLEGAL. So even if they could drink and could drive, doesn't mean they're gonna do both at the same time.

You're missing the point... The reason why Panda said that to sf97 is that sf97 said that he would like to see it drop down to 16 since 16-year-olds can drive and that can kill a lot of people, but what Panda was trying to say was that it would make it even worse because they could drink and drive. She's not implying that people over the age of 16 don't do that as well, but the reason why I agree is because 16-year-olds are new to driving, and like others here mentioned "Driving comes before drinking"

Definitely a big no to 16 year olds drinking This reminds me of last summer when I was waiting for the train and an underage kid came up to me and asked me if his driver's licence looked like him. I said "kind of", and he told me it was a fake ID so he can get booze. Idk why he felt the need to tell me, I was definitely not impressed!

It has been scientifically proven that cigarettes are bad for your health and by raising the legal age to 21, it may discourage more people from wanting to smoke cigarettes. In the Australian state of Tasmania, there is currently a proposal to ban the sale of cigarettes to anyone born after the year 2000. It wouldn't surprise me if other states and countries begin to look into banning the sale of cigarettes for anyone born after a certain time. www.ntnews.com.au/news/independent-mlc-ivan-dean-will-again-seek-to-ban-sale-of-cigarettes-to-people-born-after-2000/news-story/02c73b5072900a483a1b4792cdc6e767
