Did anyone notice now that the cultural mid 2010s didn't last as long as the early and late 2010s? Late 2013-mid 2014 was mid but you could feel some tinges of the early 2010s hanging around in that period. It feels like the only "pure" mid 2010s period imo was the late 2014-mid 2015 era. The mid '10s gradually declined around late 2015-mid 2016. It ended abruptly when Trump was inaugurated and Vine was shut down. The mid 00s and 80s have survived longer than the mid 10s, you could reasonably understand why some people would call 2007 or 1987 as culturally "mid" years where 2017 it was undeniably late.

For me the mid 2010's started in mid 2013 (transition in late 2012-early 2013) and died off in late 2016, it didn't feel as short, the duration of it was similar to the mid 90's IMO.

For me the mid 2010's started in mid 2013 (was quickly dying off in late 2012-early 2013 anyway) and died off in late 2016, didn't feel as short, the duration of it was similar to the mid 90's IMO. Quickly dying off in late 2012? Late 2012 was still part of the electropop era, still pre-Vine (which was an extremely popular mid-2010's app that came out in January 2013 and shut down in January 2017) words like Selfie weren't popular yet, and the iPhone still had their skeuomorphism design. Late 2012 was purely early 2010's IMO.

I would say spring 2013 would be an appropriate start of the early-to-mid 2010s transition.

True but at the same time during that era it saw was the release of the Wii U which started the transition from 7th gen to 8th gen gaming, Taylor Swift going from country music to 100% bubblegum pop, release of Windows 8 which made the minimalist design era mainstream etc. So we were rather in a transition in that period tbh.

Red is not entirely pop. There’s still a decent amount of country in that album. It was a transitional album at most.

2016 was still relatively mid 2010s, but you could smell the late 2010s from miles away.

I can hardly tell the mid and late 2010s apart. The 2010s were consistent compared to other decades of the past

I can hardly tell the mid and late 2010s apart. The 2010s were consistent compared to other decades of the past I generally agree that it wasn't nearly as changeful (at least culturally) compared to the 2000s. Still, 2010 and 2015 are pretty different.

I can easily tell 2006 and 2009 apart but 2016 and 2019 feel more or less the same

Donald Trump's presidency & victory in late 2016 was the true downfall of the mid 2010s.
