I don't know if anyone who was around in the 80's remembers this guy, or if you weren't then you have heard this guy's music, but he was a popular act in the late 80's with his debut album "Introducing the Hardline", back when it came out he was apparently compared to Prince, Michael Jackson, James Brown and Sam Cooke. Here's two of his songs from this era:
After 1988, he decided to go the underground route and try to be known as a serious artist and not some pop star, he changed his name to Sananda Maitreya in 2001 and is still releasing music under his new name:
