2000 - Y2K debacle, election later that year, infamous Florida recount, first year of the 2000s 2001 - 9/11, Bush sworn in 2003 - war on terror began 2004 - "Mean Girls", Facebook created, another election 2005 - YouTube and Reddit launched, seen as quintessential 2000s year 2006 - another quintessential 2000s year, expansion of emo and scene 2007 - iPhone launched, Kanye West's "Graduation", beginning of recession 2008 - Recession in full swing, Obama elected 2009 - Obama sworn in, some notable songs came out that year ("Replay," "Tik Tok," "Fireflies")
2002 was kinda just.... there. Nothing notable happened.

It was the definitive early 2000s year. Early 2002 was pretty depressing after 9/11 and the end of the year things were getting back together again. I personally didn't like it but, the pop culture was pretty solid (except for most of the music).
2002 was just depressing (mainly the first half) and ultra-conservative, this was a very patriotic time and there was also a lot of Post-9/11 country music (like I understand why it was big but wow, was it terrible). Personal life sucked though as I was getting bullied quite a lot. It was also a very conformist time (as I have stated quite a lot before).
On a more positive note, the technology was very good and well balanced. The movies were pretty good, the TV shows were great and the animation in general was excellent. Video gaming was really good too during this time, the hype for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was real (my second favorite GTA game behind GTA V), the Playstation 2 pretty much dominated the gaming scene at the time. Anime was also really popular in 2002.
I guess, if you were the conformist type (crowd follower), then you would get along pretty well in 2002. If you were a guy, then being a dude-bro/Chad was kind of where it was at (pretty crappy time to be a geek like me though haha).
I guess the reason why 2002 gets overlooked by some people is because, there wasn't too many big events that year and it was largely defined by events that had happened in 2001. Though, I have seen many people get nostalgic over 2002 though, so it's not entirely overlooked and I have definitely seen the year get appreciation.

Literally I just want to copy and paste most of you said. I do feel like 2002 was like a premium version of most of 2001, it just felt like a better version despite the politics. The more I think about the dude bro culture and even alt right stuff from a couple years ago was tamer than some of than the hyper conformist pseduo alpha male culture. I also felt that skateboarding, goth and metal had a better presence in 2002 and as bit earlier it felt more corporate. I felt like also 2002 paved the way for some of the better trends in 03 and 04.

Late 2000 was too empty, 2001 too artificial and boring, late 2001 too tragic, early 2003 the pure early 2000s are dying, the best parts of mid 2003 to early 2004 are just echos of 2002 imo.

Loved 2002 for so many personal and pop culture reasons - My first relationship - SHARRRRRRRRRRRRRRONNNN loved the Osbournes - GTA VICE CITY hello ! - by 2002 everyone had ps2,Gamecube or Xbox it was in full swing - Sonic on a NINTENDO console for the first time ever on GBA! - Wrestlemania X8 Rock vs Hogan and Rock vs Brock at Summerslam 2002 my favorite WWF pay per views ever - 8mile Eminem mania, we all remember how crazy that was - Avril blowing up - Fox was so good this year, That episode of Simpsons where Homer gets high, Best season of Malcolm in the Middle - Pop Punk excellence - MTV and MTV 2 both 10/10 this year - seeing Blockbuster promote the hell out of DVD was fun lol - That 80s show, yeah it sucked but it was interesting see 80s nostalgia come in along with Vice City

My personal life and experiences makes me pretty sour towards the era. Things got much better for me anyway in 2004, personally speaking. I feel kinda crappy sometimes for bashing eras from the past because there are people that look back pretty fond of them otherwise.

Well atleast with the late 2010s, the alpha male chad culture has been criticized by some people. Lol, remember the phrase "no homo", if you complemented a dude then you HAD to say that pretty much. I cringed so hard when I started hearing "no homo" again in 2017, I was like "are we seriously going back there?" haha.

No way. No year from the first half of the 2000's is ignored or underrated. 2008 and 2009 are way more overlooked.

It isn't. 2002 is the quintessential early 2000s year. I lived through it and the energy was very optimistic and happy.

Ironically I felt that despite some of those people being pretty right wing, some of them came across as more liberal in certain things, possibly even more than your average alpha type bro from the early 2000s based on limited interactions, but it’s hard to compare. at least both of types of people arent as common before. Not sure if it really matters anymore, for me right now I wouldn’t care much for such people. Doesn’t seem like we are going to have a new bro trend in our current era any time soon.

Nothing notable happened. 2002 had the Bali Bombings terrorist attack, which was a pretty significant event and made headlines around the world.
