2002 often gets overlooked because 9/11 happened the year before and 2003 had the Invasion of Iraq

I think it's mainly because 2002 was such an uneventful year it is not noticeable as the other years, but it doesn't mean it is one of the most forgettable years. To me it's one of the best years of the 2000s pop culturally and I am constantly seeing people regarding it as one of the best years of the 2000s.

Avril Lavigne and Simple Plan broke out that year so it is not overlooked by me at least.

No way. No year from the first half of the 2000's is ignored or underrated. 2008 and 2009 are way more overlooked. I'd say 2009 is more overlooked than 2008. I think 2008 is well-liked, especially for movies and video games, as well as the start of the electropop era. It's 2009 that most people dislike. This was the peak of crunkcore and CN Real, so maybe that's why.

Also 2009 was the final months of Circuit City and KB toys leaving many malls feeling empty. In 2007 and 2008 tons of classic 2000s TV shows left the airwaves so when 2009 came around there was nothing to fill it. No Sopranos (ended 2007 ) No Toonami (ended 2008) no TRL ( ended in 2008 but was sh* t in the end) No King of Queens (ended in 2007) No The OC (ended early 2007) not to mention That 70s show and Malcolm in the middle (ended in 2006) TV in the late 2000s had a huge void and it kept getting worse and worse, not to mention the vibe/atmosphere was vastly different from the rest of the 2000s

Not a bad time there. It's kids TV that was bad in my opinion. Whilst live-action sitcoms were thriving, cartoons weren't. Barring some exceptions like Phineas and Ferb and Total Drama (which isn't even made in America), it was mainly composed of filler (Johnny Test) and long-in-the-tooth shows like SpongeBob and FOP. Oh, and Cartoon Network airing live-action. Nick never really recovered whereas Cartoon Network got better around 2010.
