Ugh... I hate 1986 for mainstream music. What a loosy and forgettable musical year, especially coming after three fantastic ones in a row. The rise of two genres to blame: adult contemporary (the spiritual successor to soft rock) and glam metal (the spiritual successor to 1970s cock rock), pushing new wave out of the charts. It's sort of sad that music went right back to mid-70s blandness. The good thing is that this year saw the introduction of a few other things like freestyle, people finally fully embracing hip hop into the mainstream (since I dunno, Blondie's "Rapture"?) and Janet Jackson. In general, 1986 is a strange and transitional year for mainstream music, sort of caught between the glorious 1983-85 era and the late-1980s. Without further ado, here's my top 20 of the year:
1. Sly Fox - "Let's Go All the Way" (What the hell is this? I love it) 2. Janet Jackson - "When I Think of You" 3. Timex Social Club - "Rumors" 4. Nu Shooz - "I Can't Wait" 5. Run-DMC - "Walk This Way"
6. Pet Shop Boys - "Suburbia" 7. Madonna - "Live to Tell" 8. Falco - "Rock Me Amadeus" 9. Cyndi Lauper - "True Colors" 10. The Bangles - "Manic Monday"
11. Paul Simon - "You Can Call Me Al" 12. Europe - "The Final Countdown" (A monument of cheese, but believe me that this is as creative as glam metal can get) 13. Peter Gabriel - "Sledgehammer" 14. Genesis - "Land of Confusion" 15. Simply Red - "Holding Back the Years"
16. Berlin - "Take My Breath Away" 17. The Bangles - "Walk Like an Egyptian" 18. Samantha Fox - "Touch Me (I Want Your Body)" 19. Cameo - "Word Up!" 20. The Jets - "Crush on You"

I don't think 1986 is quite as much of a stinker of a year for '80s music like 1980 and 1988 were, but it would definitely have to be one of my least favourite. Still, with that being, I would actually consider "Don't Dream It's Over" to be among the best songs of the entire decade, possibly even one of the best songs ever.
1. "Don't Dream It's Over" - Crowded House 2. "Manic Monday" - The Bangles 3. "Addicted To Love" - Robert Palmer 4. "Wild Wild Life" - Talking Heads 5. "Kiss" - Prince 6. "The Final Countdown" - Europe 7. "You're The Voice" - John Farnham 8. "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" - Wang Chung 9. "I Can't Wait" - Stevie Nicks 10. "Walk This Way" - Run-DMC
11. "Bizarre Love Triangle" - New Order 12. "Livin' On a Prayer" - Bon Jovi
