Hello Everyone!
I've been a regular at Inthe00s for about two and a half years now, and I've really enjoyed the pop culture discussions I've had with SharksFan99, so when he promoted this board in his signature over there, I figured I definitely had to sign up!
For those of you who don't know me, I'm 25 years old, and I live in San Diego, California, in the United States. I'm a woman with an attraction towards other women, but I prefer not to label my sexuality, as I feel more comfortable expressing myself through my sheer individuality rather than through subcultures. I have a generally retro taste in media, though I have grown steadily more accepting of modern culture in recent times, as well. I'm a huge fanatic of popular music, hence why my chatroom username here is popgeek; I love all sorts of music, but my favourite periods would definitely be 1982 to 1985 and 1994 to 2000.
You may have picked up, from the sentence above, that I don't typically use American spelling. That's because I'm really interested in the UK – my ancestry is primarily linked to the British Isles – and I don't mind being called a total dork because I totally embrace all my oddities and will gladly make fun of myself in good humour!
My personal role model is Rachel Stevens, former member of S Club 7 and now a mum to two daughters. In addition to having recorded two of my favourite pop albums of all time, fueled primarily by the impeccable class in her voice, I admire her for her natural, elegant beauty that I've largely looked for in myself, but more importantly, the way in which she conveys her image. For a pop star who was one of the most prominent models to regularly appear in the now-defunct FHM Magazine, she is surprisingly unpretentious as a person, having lived what she calls a very "un-rock & roll" lifestyle and also expressing an uncommon human decency by all accounts I can personally find. She is grateful for the success she has found, but is motivated in a way that I personally relate to far more than your prototypical narcissistic mega-diva. She strikes the perfect balance. She is also comfortable enough to enthusiastically call other women sexy; regardless of how you classify her – again, I really don't like labelling sexuality – it still makes her so much more identifiable to me personally and also made me so much more accepting of my own attraction to other women. After several years of unhealthy self-deprecation and insecurity, Rachel Stevens was absolutely instrumental in helping me find my own voice and loving myself. Call her a manufactured pretty-face if you want; I personally see far more in her, and am eternally inspired by her because of it.
