I'm not sure if anyone else thinks the 2020s will pan out this way, but I actually think that the 2020s will follow the same trajectory as the 90s-2000s. History tends to repeat itself, and the 1950s, 1980s and 2010s were all based on conformist and materialistic pop cultures. The 2020s are likely to be a backlash against this decade, so it wouldn't surprise me if alternative music (in the form of electronica, not rock) becomes popular and influential to the pop culture scene. What do you think?

I think also it wouldn't be surprising. Yep. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

@sharksfan99
I think so as well, I think it might follow a early 2000s template for the first couple of years. Technology has come to a screeching stop of late. I think it will also be like the early 2000's in that social media won't be a thing that exists in our lives. Anything that was cool in the 2010s is already showing signs of backlash, hell Hipster is on the decline now and the decade is not even over yet. I am predicting we might get another Teen Pop era like 97-2001 since last 5 years have been Trap Rap.
For video games we are already seeing XBOX and Nintendo working together, we might see Microsoft buy Nintendo in the future, that would destroy Sony and put them out of business.

I doubt that social media will disappear overnight though. I tend to think that it will be just as influential and significant as it is now, to be honest, especially since we're less than 11 months away from the start of 2020. The only way I can see social media ever becoming obsolete is if virtual reality supersedes it in some way.

Technology will always be a part of out lives, social media will just evolve somehow. Hopefully new versions of it will pop up that really believe in user privacy. I do hope for a revival of chat rooms like the early 2000s though! They were fun. I can see people getting tired of trap rap pretty soon. I also wonder if K-pop will become a big deal in the west at some point if media gets a little more open minded. I can't see Sony ever being put out of business.

I think it will be interesting to see how social media will evolve once virtual reality becomes an integral part of our day to day lives. Who knows, maybe social media (at least in the form that we know it today) will be rendered obsolete? Unless social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter etc. somehow adopt VR technology, I don't see why someone would want to continue to log into those sites when they could just enter into their own virtual worlds instead and communicate with others through that means.
