I don't know if the 2010s were that much better in terms of materialism. The early 2010s were pretty good but, the late 2010s might have been more materialistic than the 2000s ever were tbh. I feel like there are only two periods of time where materialism was put aside since the 80s, that being 1988 - 1996 and 2008 - 2012. I think 87-88 was kinda materialistic. Maybe even 88-90 to a lesser extent. I didn’t find 2018/2019-present to be that materialistic as 2013-2017 2005-2007 maybe even 2003 and 2004 to a lesser extent. Did you find 1983-1986 to be materialistic? I hear people say that the 1980s are materialistic, especially the mid 1980s. 2005-2007 is the height of materialism in the 2000s thanks to snap rap, maybe Myspace, maybe emo and definitely reality TV shows. 2003-2004 is when crunk and emo are rising, also reality shows promoting materialism like "MTV Pimp My Ride" and many others. I don't know if snap is a thing in 2004. The Bling era is in full swing by 2003. I think materialistic hip hop already became a thing in the late 1990s before going full force in the 2000s and peaking in the mid 2000s.

While we're on that topic of materialism. Were the late 90s a materialistic time? I wasn't around back then and, unlike with the 80s, there aren't many essays about materialism in the 90s on the internet. The way i see it (through the lens of pop culture) the late 90s were all about futurism (think y2k culture/design/aesthetics, Matrix and etc) I don't know any pop culture artifact from the late 90s that are all about consumerism. Can someone who understands that time period, clear things up for me?.

Money was getting better from 96 onward so people were buying more things.

Mid 2010s deserve the backlash they are getting Are the 2010s even having a backlash? I remember there was an early 2010s backlash back in the mid 2010s, but overtime that backlash died and now people feel nostalgic for that time period. It doesn't compare to the 2000s backlash we had. People REALLY hated the 2000s for a while. I blame covid making the late 2010s seem like the "calm before the storm" and the internet making nostalgia a "commodity" that people want to acquire by force.

I just don’t remember it been so over the top and mainstreamized, in the average person kind of sense, even in 1999, there is this down to earth vibe, compared to years like 2007 and 2014. Maybe it was getting there around then. You could argue 2000 and 2001 a bit earlier you saw more of this wannabe diva attitude where it was cool to be materialistic as well.

There's definitely a 2010s backlash going right now, actually, there's an "all-things millennials" backlash going on right now, and hipsters (++Skinny Jeans) seem to be the center of it. Similar to how we used to make fun of emo kids back in 2015. I see the late 2010s also get a lot of hate, some people think that that was when the world "went to shit" (lol). Jesus, looking back, the mid 2010s were so... Corny

The Wii U was a fantastic console with fantastic games on it, just marketed terribly and had a failed gimmick with the gamepad.
Sure, from a 2021 view, it seems more like a stopgap between the Wii and Switch, and practically the whole Wii U library is now available on Switch, but back then, it provided a solid gaming experience.

All of the 2010s besides the early part. And even then I only really liked it for personal reasons, objectively it was filled with cringe jank.

2000-2001 and late 2005 - Most manufactured parts of the 2000s 1972-1975 - Insanely bland, boring and cheesy 1950s - Too conformist

I think people in this thread are confusing disgust with disappointment/underwhelm/uninterest.

March 2020-Present.
Worst time to live since the Great Depression and it very well could get worse than that, very quickly. We could end up with a WWII situation this decade.
All of this suffering because the American evangelical church couldn't accept the cultural changes that have occurred since 1963, culminating in same-sex marriage being legalized in 2015.
