2010 and 2020 have differences but they're not as big as 2000 and 2010. In 2000 social media was nonexistent but 2010 has mostly the same kind of stuff as today

It seems to me that everytime this sort of question comes up, the consensus always seem to go towards the two most recent years being the most similar. "2010 is more like 2020 than 2000" "2000 is more like 2020 than 1980" "1980 is more like 2020 than 1940" The interesting question in which cases specifically is it the other way around? Exactly as I was trying to say, you put it into words with those examples. People need to correct for this evident bias or we will continue to get predictable (inaccurate) answers, it's not scientific. We should get a Nobel Prize in Decadeology for this discovery.

The conversation here is pretty heavily focused around music and that's one area 2010 is more like 2020 (though it's really like neither). In regards to computers, in 2010, most people still had a desktop computer or at least a laptop. In 2020, most people use their tablets or phones. Ah, that makes sense. Though even musically in some ways 2010 is more like 2000 with things such as Eminem still being one of the top charting rappers (he's still around and quite popular in 2020, but you don't hear about him near as much nor does he have as many hits as he did in 2000 and 2010.), Though on the other hand, 2010 is also when trap music started emerging with acts such as Waka Flocka Flame and it's when Drake's debut album came out. So overall more like 2020 yeah. Also, electropop was all the rage in 2010 and the EDM that would be popular later in the '10s arose out of that. Justin Bieber's first big year was 2010 and he's still relevant today. Aside from music though, 2010 was a lot more like 2000.

Surprised people are saying 2020. Even aside from the pandemic, 2010 was actually technologically a lot more like 2000. For one, 2009 & 2010 are the years that smartphones were just starting to become mainstream devices, but they still weren't solidified until 2012. Most people still used cellphones with keyboards or even flip phones, which people in 2000 used too. To watch movies, people were still using mostly DVD or maybe Blu Ray, similar to 2000 where there was a toss up between mainly DVDs and the odd VCR, whereas in 2000 it's almost 100% streaming services being used. Cable TV was still very popular in both 2000 and 2010, whereas in 2020 it's dying, again to streaming services. One exception to this for me is computers, as Windows 7 was a lot more similar to what we have now than Windows 98/ME which people used in 2000. Politically, 2008 to 2015/16 was very much it's own era not like 2000 or 2020. Honestly, the existence of smartphones alone puts 2010 closer to 2020. iPads and most modern tech as well. 2000 at least a portion of it was like a watered down version of late 1999. worlds apart from 2010

Justin Bieber's first big year was 2010 and he's still relevant today. Aside from music though, 2010 was a lot more like 2000. In what ways though? 2000 was either a proto early 2000s in the late part or a watered down version of 1999 in the early part. I don't t think the political climate was the same at all, both eras had democratic president and a few 2000s similarities, but im not sure thats enough imo. Early Obama era was slowly building up towards the mid 2010s type liberalism while 90s liberalism was winding down in the 99/00 and becoming increasing conservative, a good part of 2000 was very very stereotypical 2000s conservative more than 2010. Tech and general pop culture was miles apart with ipods and increasing popularity of smart phones and hipster fashion and design asthetics that are sitll not fully outated today and can somewhat still be spotted on a everyday person. Also dial up was virtually dead by 2010 and file sharing was on and off in 2000/2001 and people were just getting used to the concept of burning a cd. I can see an argument for 2006 having more solid similarities with 2000/2001 on some level but not a huge amount. I dunno thats just my opinion.
