A thread for sharing and discussing songs released by artists/bands which contrast from their more well-known work.
This 1997 song from Midnight Oil. It sounds completely different from their earlier, more well-known releases from the '80s. I guess Midnight Oil composed this song just to try and remain relevant in the mainstream music scene. Unfortunately, it did not chart at all.

This is somewhat of an exception to this topic, because Chris Cornell did indeed return to producing alternative-rock compositions after the release of this single. However, the mere fact that this electropop song contrasts so heavily from his other work and it was produced by Timbaland, makes this a perfect candidate for this thread. I still can't believe Chris Cornell would ever release a song like this!

Since Silverchair broke up in 2011, Daniel Johns has reinvented himself as a pop artist. While I can understand that he wants to experiment with music and try different approaches, the quality of his solo work is sub-par compared to his Silverchair output. You wouldn't think that the person who released "Cool on Fire" also penned the lyrics of "Tomorrow" or "Ana's Song".

Silverchair dabbed into Nu-Metal territory with their Neon Ballroom track, "Spawn (Again)". I only discovered this song last night and I was really surprised to hear it, because it's such a stark contrast to their more well-known work. This is actually quite heavy for them!

Not sure if it counts but I really enjoyed Paramore's departure from their emo Pop Punk debutes into fun New Wavey Alt. Rock. I think I forgot to put their big hit "Still Into You" in my top 10 for 2013, but it's definitely up there.

"Still Into You" generally isn't too bad.

I believe that Winger tried to reinvent themselves in '93.

I also think that Thomas "Quorthon" Forsberg went from black metal to grunge in 1993-1994.

If there's an artist who truly epitomizes this topic, it would definitely have to be Sia. Believe it or not, before she emerged into the mainstream with "Clap Your Hands" back in 2010, she was an alternative/indie-rock artist! Take a listen to the song I shared above. You never would have envisioned that the artist who released this song would go on to release "Chandelier" and become one of the biggest pop stars in the world.

Personally, I remember Sia from a song contest on escforum.net in 2009 where you could get people to vote on the soundtrack of your life. (The person who organized it has indie-leaning taste. )
