Music 2009 - Electropop, dance-pop 2015 - EDM, dance-pop, trap rising in popularity 2021 - trap, synthpop Equal
Politics 2009 - Barrack Obama 2015 - Barrack Obama (2017-2020 - Donald Trump) 2021 - Joe Biden
Not only did 2009 and 2015 have the same president, but between 2015 and 2021 there was a whole different president! Definitely more like 2009 in this department.
Technology - 2021
Based on these three things, 2015 equal to both 2009 and 2021.

The similarities 2015 shares with 2009 is that they're Obama and Pre-COVID years. Other than that, 2015 shares more in common with 2021 than 2009. 2015 was the first year I felt that the late 2000s including 2009 were dated. In 2021, 2015 looks recent, modern and contemporary. 2014 is the last dated year, but even that's a stretch.
If I was told that certain songs, movies and TV shows released in 2021 came out in 2015 or vice versa, I wouldn't blink an eye. The Weeknd was huge then and still is today. 2015 and 2021 have strong connections to the late 2010s. 2015 blew up the dark trend in pop culture which still goes strong today. Movies and TV in 2009 weren't saturated in sequel and reboots like 2015 and 2021.
Not everyone had smartphones, smart devices, tablets, smart watches in 2009, but did in 2015 and 2021. The iPad wasn't released until 2010. The Apple Watch came out in 2015, but by 2013, smartwatches were already a thing. Instagram and Snapchat weren't around in 2009, but were huge by 2015 and still huge in 2021. Physical media had presence in 2009, but dead and buried in 2015. Borders, Blockbuster and Hollywood Videos were in business in 2009, but history by 2015. Streaming was primitive in 2009, but was advanced in 2015 and now in 2021.
Cancel culture was unheard of in 2009, but was a major pop culture force in 2015 and in 2021. 2015 is when the SJW vs Alt Right war and political correctness blew up. Trump announced he'd run for the 2016 election on June 16, 2015. In November 2016, he got elected and became president on January 20, 2017. Despite Biden getting elected in November 2020, Trump was still president for the first 20 days of 2021.

I think it’s more like 2009 honestly. Sure, technology and certain styles from 2015 are still present today but so much has happened between now and 2015 on a societal level that makes me see it as more different. 2015 is not really like either year but if I had to choose I’d go with 2009.
Reasons why 2015 is more like 2009: - Obama was in office - Pre-Covid - Before Trump Presidency - Gay Marriage was not legal in every state in the US in 2009 and for half of 2015 - Before Me Too Movement - Millennial culture was the dominant culture - Before Gen Z came into the spotlight - Before TikTok - Before Hip-Hop was the most popular music genre - Before the SoundCloud/Emo Trap of the late 10s - Before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were married - Core 2010s shows were airing (Glee, Kardashians, Modern Family, Big Bang Theory, Parks and Rec) - Although streaming is popular in 2015, cable was not yet uncommon like now - Hipster fashion being popular - MCU was in its Infinity Saga and in its prime (No MCU movies so far this decade) - Artists like Cardi B, Billie Eillish, Lil Nas X, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat etc. were not yet heard of
Things that make 2015 more like 2021: - Technology mostly the same - Streaming popular - Donald Trump has a political presence - Trap is popular - Smartphones and tablets are common - Flat design still common - Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat all still popular - 2010s fashion still common (although early 20s fashion trends are rising imo) - BLM is established (although viewed differently now than in 2015 with more support) - Artists like Drake, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande are still popular

I agree. 2015 is like base of current pop culture. 2013 to early 2015 is almost similar to the present but the remainder of 2015 is a bit closer. Second half of 2015 was inseparable from 2016-2018 and the majority of pop culture has carried through from as is from 2015 to the present with some minor exceptions. The question should be how different are we from 2015 if anything ? Yes there were mostly there in 2013 and 14 but 2015 had some minor upgrades and modifications and is the base of modern pop culture of today. Walking in a mall in October 2015 and April 2021 you will see mostly identical fashion, music, style, food trends, graphic style. The main difference then would be more visible manbuns, undercuts, beards ( even though they were slowly dying even then), a few more slightly dated 2010s clothing but mostly the same, more bad superhero films and merch and rainbow flags.

2021.
2009 still had too many cultural ties with the noughties for it to be truly comparable with 2015.

I disagree with October 2015 and April 2021 being identical. Right now, fashion seems to be heading towards baggier trends and flashier colors which is the antithesis of mid 2010s fashion. 2015 fashion tends to have minimalist and even more 2010s styles than what stores are offering today. The music is certainly different in both 2015 and 2021 if you payed attention to the charts. Also, 2013 - early 2015 has more in common with the early 2010s than it is today.

I agree that it’s not identical as hipster was @ it’s peak in 2015. In 2021, hipster is dead. I also share the belief that 2013-early 2015 has more in common with the early 2010s than today. In fact I always saw the 2013-early 2015 period as an early 2010s update or stimulus package. I group late 2009-early 2015 as one era. I also group mid 2015-early 2021 as another era. Hipster was dying from mid 2015 onwards. Yuccie s took over between mid 2015 and 2016. People confuse hipster with yuccie and also confuse normies with tattoos, beards and undercuts who look like hipsters.

I said fashion was “mostly identical” and I would say 85-90 percent identical to the latter half of 2015 going into 2016. The 10 to 15 difference is core 10s cheese that really peaked between 2011 to early 2015 that was already fading in mid 2015 to 2016 onwards it is just more faded today and stuck in 2019 with very minor changes like late 90s bell bottom jeans. walking into the gap, h&m, etc and most places clothes are still mostly identical to 2015. I can literally buy the same shirts I got then right now

Music-wise, 2015 is by far closer to 2021 than 2009.
Society-wise, 2015 is closer to 2021 since we started to see that huge political divide back then, though obviously nowhere near as pronounced as today's landscape.
Technology-wise, 2015 is closer to 2021. 2009 was still pre-streaming, pre-tablets, app culture was only blossoming and still rudimentary compared to the Vine and TikTok eras.
Fashion-wise, 2015 is closer to 2009.
