What are some songs that you think perfectly represent the transition between decades? Here are a few good examples:
1950s/1960s
The 1960s notoriously culturally began very late. The 60s culturally did not truly start until 1965. Rock and roll was still popular up until 1964, but around 1963/1964, the British Invasion was happening, and bands like The Rolling Stones and The Beatles were becoming popular. Some of The Rolling Stones first songs were covers of rock n roll songs like Carol, as shown here. However, this cover has a bluesier and harder sound than the original version, and you can hear that 60s British rock sound coming in, which would truly get big in 1965 when Rolling Stones released the song Satisfaction and The Beatles released Rubber Soul.
Speaking of The Beatles, here's another Beatles song from 1963 that shows the early rock and roll sound a lot of 60s British bands started with, but it's already starting to develop into the Beatles characteristic pop rock/merseybeat sound that defined the mid-1960s.
1960s/1970s
You can draw a link between 60s British/psychedelic rock here, and the funk and soul that would dominate the 70s. The lead singer, Eric Burdon, was originally the lead singer of The Animals, one of the defining bands of the 60s mod movement. Later, he'd join the band War, which became one of the defining funk groups of the 70s.
This Bowie track is pretty much the missing link between 60s psychedelia (which he started off with, such as the legendary song Space Oddity), and the 70s glam rock he became famous for.
1970s/1980s
Y'all saw this coming, but I can't think of a more 70s/80s transistion song than this. It's literally the transition from 70s disco to 80s new wave right here.
1980s/1990s
Although Michael Jackson was predominately an 80s pop star, he remained popular in the early 90s. His album Dangerous was the last golden age Michael Jackson album to come out before the pedophilia accusations came in 1993. New jack swing basically bridges the gap between 80s dance pop, and the 90s pop trends we'd see later like Backstreet Boys and TLC.
Even the comments are filled with people discussing how this track transitioned rock from 80s glam rock/metal, to 90s grunge, and how they're the missing link between 80s and 90s rock. Most grunge bands hated glam metal, but Mother Love Bone were one of the only bands to embrace it.
Here's another famous Mother Love Bone song from the same album (Apple). Once again, feels like a transitional track between the 80s and 90s. It might lean a bit more toward 90s grunge, but there's still an 80s influence in it.
1990s/2000s
The 90s culturally didn't truly abate until about 2002. Once it did, teen pop and boy bands began to decline, and be replaced by urban R&B. This track in particular was produced by the infamous Timbaland, who would define the 2000s in general.
Another Timbaland-produced track. You can still hear it has a bit of a 90s sound to it, but it's turning towards 2000s.
2000s/2010s
We see on of the defining 2000s pop artists, Lady Gaga, crossing over with the 2010s EDM boom. This isn't the only example however, but you can hear the electro house influence in this track.
You can hear the electropop sound in this Rihanna song with influences from house and EDM that defined the 2010s. IMO We Found Love, which came out not long after, is a clear-cut 2010s song.
Do you guys have any other examples? Let me know in the replies.
