Inspired by John Titor’s thread for the 2000s
2010: 50-60% 2010 was already pretty much an early 2010s year due to Facebook and Twitter (although not as popular as it would later become) being popular, The Walking dead premiers, Obama being president for over a year at that point, 2010s artists like Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, Drake and more being popular, skinny jeans, recession, MCU exists etc. But most people’s fashion was still stuck in the 2000s
2011: 65-70% When the 2010s really found their identity. Electro pop is everywhere, osama bin laden is killed, occupy Wall Street, GoT, Siri is introduced, adele releases 21, party rock anthem, and hipster enters its peak imo. This or 2012 could be peak early 2010s
2012: 75% Not core 2010s just yet to me but it could be considered core. Instagram starts getting popular midway through 2012, Tumblr, first Avengers movie, One Direction blows up, hipster is everywhere, indie music starts to get more popular, #YOLO, #SWAG, Gangnam Style, Pewdiepie at his peak. Simple early 2010s
2013: 90% First core 2010s year. Early 10s artists are still relevant while mid 10s artists like Ariana Grande, Zedd, Migos, etc start to get popular. Peak “hashtagmania” along with 2014. Trap is relevant but not peaking yet. Netflix originals. Obama’s second term. iOS 7. Twerking. Vine. The word “vibe” becomes widespread thanks to Kendrick Lamar
2014: 100% BLM, #Selfie, typical 2010s fashion, no 2000s holdovers whatsoever, SJW culture starts coming in although this is before it really got widespread, FNAF. Last year before Trump
2015: 100% Netflix & Chill, “Deez Nutz” and “what are those?!” Vines, Trump is already talking about building walls and maga is a thing, EDM, trap, mid 2010s dancehall music
2016: 100% I honestly don’t even need to explain. THE quintessential year of the 2010s imo without a doubt
2017: 90% Still very 2010s. #MeeToo, Cardi B, Post Malone, Travis Scott, Despacito, fidget spinners, Alt right, SoundCloud and emo rap, Pre Billie Eillish, pre tiktok, pre widespread AirPod adoption. The last fully core 2010s year
2018: 80% Core 2010s until sometime in the second half of the year. Drake and Cardi B dominate this year, Last year of EDM also, March For Our Lives happens, but at the same time emo rap is dying, tiktok, Billie Eillish and AirPods are coming in towards the end of the year
2019: 70% Still a very 2010s year but no longer core. Still pre-covid, Trap is still everywhere, soundcloud rap on its last legs, MCU ends infinity saga, lots of 2010s franchise end, Trump impeachment #1, Area 51 invasion and Popeyes chicken sandwhich fights (both of those aren’t that important but they just seem like things that would only happen in the 2010s tbh). 2019 is the twilight of the 2010s

Way too early to truly tell given we still don’t know what the other half of the early 2020’s will bring.

I would also add Minecraft in 2011. The only thing I disagree is the emo rap dying in 2018. Sad by XXXTentacion was a #1 hit after his death and also the year when Juice Wrld blew up. Better Now by Post Malone was a huge hit in 2018 as well.

Better Now by Post Malone was a huge hit in 2018 as well. Yeah 2018 seemed to be peak emo and dark rap. I think it started declining in 2019 for something more upbeat. Yeah you’re right. XXXTENTACION’s “Sad” and Juice Wrld blowing up with “All Girls Are The Same” and Lucid Dreams” was the peak of emo rap and made 2018 so dark. I think emo rap started dying at some point in the 2018-19 school year though, but wasn’t completely dead until sometime in 2019. Most of 2018 was dominated by emo rap

I agree. 2019 was infinitely more 2010s than 2010 was. Usually the 0 year of the decade has the least culturally in common with the rest of the decade. 1950 1960 1970 1980 1990 2000 The only exceptions to the rule are 1930 and 1940, for obvious reasons

2010: 50%
2011: 70%
2012: 80%
2013: 85%
2014: 95%
2015: 100%
2016: 100%
2017: 95%
2018: 90%
2019: 75%
The late part of the decade defines it more than the early part when core 2010s attributes were primitive and/or not widespread in mainstream culture.
