1. 2007-2008 (Naruto, Johnny Test, Club Penguin, Phineas and Ferb, Flash games, Bakugan, Halo 3. It's all here. Arguably the greatest school year in gaming history (though that's a topic for another day). Snap rap also hit its peak with Soulja Boy. Rhythm games like Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band were massive) 2. 2008-2009 (Similar to 2007-2008, but also with things like YouTube annotations, Total Drama, and crunkcore. The Dark Knight was released on home video in this school year, and well, it's the quintessential film of the era debatably. Pokemon Diamond came out this year, considered by some the best Pokemon game ever. Snap rap declined in popularity in favor of electropop. The Great Recession begins, and Obama becomes president. Still, no actual early 2010s cultural elements came in yet, and most late 2000s cultural elements are still popular. Guitar Hero: World Tour, Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero on Tour, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, and Guitar Hero: Metallica kept rhythm games popular for another school year.) 3. 2006-2007 (IMO the first true late 2000s school year. Pokemon Generation 4 began, the Wii and PS3 came out, Windows Vista launched, the CN City era was succeeded by the Yes era, and YouTube Poops blew up in popularity. This is also when Flash games really became big with titles like The Impossible Game and Super Smash Flash) 4. 2005-2006 (See my post about late 2000s things that began in 2005. Batman Begins was released, Johnny Test began (albeit with cel animation rather than Flash animation), and Club Penguin launched. Smosh also began making YouTube videos this year. Still feels more mid 2000s as a whole though.) 5. 2009-2010 (this school year doesn't even feel that late 2000s in retrospect. So many things that came out of this school year, like Avatar, Angry Bird, Farmville, Minecraft, Justin Bieber, Annoying Orange, modern Nickelodeon, Fanboy and Chum Chum, Windows 7, and Adventure Time feel VERY early 2010s. In fact, this school year to me is more early 2010s than late 2000s with some late 2000s holdovers. An example would be Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, which is part of the 4th generation of Pokemon. Flash games are also still popular, but mobile games are rapidly rising in popularity. Rhythm games begin declining in popularity. Guitar Hero 5 didn't get the same kind of attention that World Tour and ESPECIALLY Legends of Rock did. Band Hero, DJ Hero, and Lego Rock Band were decently popular. I actually owned the latter as a kid LMAO. Still, for the most part, this school year is transitional. 2010-2011 IMO is the first full-fledged early 2010s school year)

If this is a ranking from best to worst, then here is my ranking: 1) 2006-2007 2) 2008-2009 3) 2009-2010 4) 2005-2006 5) 2007-2008 I find this hard because the second half of the 2000s sucked personally besides some culture from 2005 through mid 2007. For example, Disney Channel is in its golden age in 2005. Disney Channel begins to change in 2006 with High School Musical and Hannah Montana debuting, but many classic shows still air. The changes take effect by late 2007 when most of the classic shows go off the air, That's So Raven, Kim Possible, etc. Watching Disney Channel in late 2007 is not the same compared to 2003 through 2005. I enjoyed Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly Place. Some music from the second half of the 2000s is enjoyable but mostly forgettable. Snap and ringtone rap crap dominated the late 2000s, which exploded in 2005. Gas prices and cost of living started getting more expensive. Hurricane Katrina happens, but the way Bush handles it is atrocious. Signs of the Great Recession appear in 2006 with the housing bubble burst. The early 2010s influence in 2008-2009 is overexaggerated. Really the only early 2010s influences I can think of are Obama winning and becoming president, electropop. 2010s fashion, TV, and movies are not established yet. 2008-2009 is cultural late 2000s with increasing early 2010s elements. 2009-2010 school year and the first half of the 2010-2011 school year are transitional. By 2011, I feel as if culture truly enters the early 2010s. I think this is a ranking of how much late 2000s vibes those school years have: 2007-2008: Pretty obvious. Blackout by Britney Spears defined the era with her beta-electropop record. Soulja Boy was peak snap music. Mobile phones were pretty diverse, you got iPhone, LG Chocolates, Razr, slider phones, and blackberries. A golden age for video games, especially the Wii and PS3. Emo and scene coexisted together. Peak of the Disney Channel craze with Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly Place. 2008-2009: Like I said before, nothing about this year screams early 2010s. Even the electropop from this school year would sound out of place by 2010-11. MySpace was the #1 social media platform behind Facebook. The Wii was selling like hot cakes. George Bush in office until January 2009. Many core 2000s fashion still visible. Scene replaced emo as the hot fashion trend. 2006-2007: The start of the proper late 2000s, although it has a mid 00s flavor. Music start to sound futuristic and electronic. Fashion is like a blend of Mcbling and neon-y/scene fashion. The Nintendo Wii and Ps3 was released and was super massive at the time. The peak of emo everything, the music, fashion, and attitude. 2009-2010: Even though this was arguably early 2010s, it was kinda in a middle of a transitional period. Many songs would fit with either the early 2010s, late 2000s, or in-between. Empire State of Mind and According To You sound core 2000s though. iPhone sales start to pick up although the majority of people were using feature phones. HD beginning to become standard. Scene continues to be going strong with minor hipster influences. 2005-2006: This year did kick off snap into the mainstream. The Office taking over the TV industry. Naruto anime debuted in the U.S/Canada. New artists such as Rihanna, T-Pain, and Chris Brown entered the spotlight but with that said, it was still the mid 2000s and mostly indistinguishable from 2004-05. Even the new artists I mentioned had songs from this period that sound unquestionably mid 2000s.

It's weird because 2010-2011 feels VERY early 2010s to me with Skrillex, Regular Show, Adventure Time, Angry Birds, Adele, Tangled, Despicable Me, Minecraft, dubstep in general, Foster the People, Friendship is Magic, the iPad, and Windows 7 ALL being in existence during this time and all being popular. 2009-2010 is like a beta version with only some of those things like Windows 7, Angry Birds, Adventure Time, and beta Minecraft existing. Literally Minecraft, the defining game of the era, was in beta, just like early 2010s culture in the 2009-2010 school year. It isn't full-fledged late 2000s like 2008-2009 is.

I hated that school year by the way. 2010-2011 screams early 2010s more so, especially 2011. 2010-2011 is better, but I would not want to go back. 2009-2010 pop culture was so weird. It felt kinda trash due to declining late 2000s influences, but lack of true early 2010s influences. It was that awkward era when Guitar Hero and Club Penguin weren't popular anymore, but Minecraft wasn't popular yet. I remember this school year was defined by 3D movies and Justin Bieber in an attempt to give this era its own identity. Honestly, most of it hasn't aged well LMAO. This was the era of Cartoon Network going live-action, Nickelodeon rebranding, and just an overall stagnant vibe. Disney XD was dope during this time though, probably the only genuinely interesting channel during that school year. I actually liked 2010-2011 though. Maybe not as great as 2011-2012, but it definitely has a much stronger identity than 2009-2010.

You KNOW 2009-2010 was trash when Fanboy and Chum Chum and Farmville are two of the things that define it for me. Compared to say, 2007-2008 or 2011-2012, it doesn't have as strong of an identity, and the things that DO define it aren't things I would want to go back to.

IMO it was the blueprint for late 2000s culture. Club Penguin, Johnny Test, High School Musical, The Office, Naruto, Hannah Montana, Guitar Hero, Smosh. It's basically like what 2000-2001 is to early 2000s culture, not a full-fledged year, but the blueprint for it.

Another reason why Disney Channel was so popular during that time. Disney Channel hit big with High School Musical 2 which is STILL the highest-viewed DCOM of all time, and Camp Rock, which was also a huge hit. The network still remained popular into 2008-2009 especially shows like Phineas and Ferb, since they had recently come out, and Hannah Montana, which got a movie, as well as new shows like Suite Life on Deck and Jonas. 2009-2010 had Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, but you did feel a decline, especially with Disney Channel beginning to move away from teen/tween sitcoms.
