Inspired by this thread: 2010-2011: This year screams early 2010s. Electro House was influencing mainstream music in a major way, you can hear that EDM drop songs are starting to creep in pop music. Adventure Time and Regular Show pretty much saved Cartoon Network from the live action crap back in 2009. Mobile games like Angry Birds, Doodlejump, and Fruit Ninja were taking over flash games. Smartphones were becoming more visible depending on where you live. Hipster creeping in fashion. Jersey Shore was unavoidable and talked about every 5 minutes. MySpace pretty much hit the dust. Youtubers like Smosh, Annoying Orange, Nigahiga, and RayWilliamJohnson defined early 2010s Youtube. Rage comics and trollface were the biggest memes. LMFAO and Adele were at top of the charts. 2011-2012: Still pretty early 2010s with hints of core 2010s. This year was like the mix of the Jersey Shore look and the Portland hipster. Social media sites like Tumblr started to take shape. Meme culture had it's beginnings here. Peak of the Dubstep genre, Skrillex was seriously inescapable. Arguably the start of the smartphone era. EDM drops are pretty the norm at this point. Games like Minecraft and Skyrim were the rage. The Brony fandom were very loud and visible. 2012-2013: Early 2010s slowly transitioning to mid 2010s. Last school year when iPhones got the skeumorphic look. Electropop was at it's last legs in this school year such as Scream & Shout and Die Young. Facebook and Instagram were co-existing. Even Instagram was very different then, it was very individualistic and chaotic and it didn't have influencers and meme pages. It was the peak of the hipster subculture in terms of music, fashion, and attitude. The peak of the festival EDM sound. The last time when memes had an old school vibe. Wii U and Windows 8 were critical failures. 2009-2010: The early 2010s were getting more clear in this time but it was at its early stages and the late 00s vibes were still significant. The Cartoon Network was in the Noods era until May 2010. Songs like Tik Tok and Bad Romance does have a clear early 2010s vibe that wouldn't be able to hit in 2008. MySpace was losing to Facebook at this point. Scene culture continued to be going strong. 2010s artists such as Justin Bieber, Drake, and Bruno Mars debuted here. 2013-2014: Last year with significant early 2010s vibes but it was pretty mid 2010s at this point. A lot of the music sounds like the early 2010s transitioning to the mid 2010s. Flat design was accelerating after the IOS 7 came out. GTA 5 came out and became the top defining video games of the core 2010s. Memes such as Doge and MLG gave birth to the dank meme of the mid 2010s, although bottom-text memes were still common. Shows like Steven Universe, Clarence, and Rick & Morty debuted.

We need to find an alternative name for "Electropop" lol Like what? Dunno, is just that Wikipedia and most music-heads define Electropop as eletronic-dance synth pop, so even songs like "don't let me down" by the Chainsmokers are Electropop songs.

Since I was the one who inspired this thread, here is my personal take:
1. 2011-2012. The peak of trollface/rage comic/Nyan Cat type memes. Minecraft explodes in popularity. Bronies and dubstep. Angry Birds is still very popular. Windows 7 is now the most popular version of Windows. Pretty much all early 2010s things are very popular. 2. 2010-2011. Nyan Cat debuted. Regular Show debuted and kid culture was truly in the early 2010s. Microsoft releases the Kinect. RayWilliamJohnson (the quintessential early 2010s YouTuber) overtakes NigaHiga to become the largest YouTuber. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is released. Dubstep starts to become popular. Party Rock Anthem and electro house. Overall very much early 2010s. 3. 2012-2013. Transistional, leaning more early 2010s, but clearly getting burnt out, and replaced with mid 2010s. Windows 8 and Wii U debut, as well as Vine, which helps bring in mid 2010s culture. Otherwise top text/bottom text memes like Grumpy Cat are the most popular. Smosh overtakes RayWilliamJohnson, but Smosh is really more of a late 2000s/early 2010s YouTuber, so YouTube culture is still mostly early 2010s. However, YouTube introduces the YouTube One layout, changed their algorithm, and lets players like PewDiePie gain rapidly in popularity, so it was clearly a transitional era. Mid 2010s cartoons like Gravity Falls start coming out. The Angry Birds phenemenon is now considered old-hat. 4. 2009-2010. Windows 7 is released. Angry Birds comes out (but becomes a phenomenon the next school year). Adventure Time comes out. Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network change their logo. Facebook is the biggest social network. Overall transistional but IMO more early 2010s. 5. 2013-2014. At this point, we are now in the mid 2010s. Vine is huge, PewDiePie is now the largest YouTuber, skeuomorphism is dying (Android and OS X being the last gasps). Some early 2010s stuff like bronies and Adventure Time remain popular, but are no longer in their prime. Outside of Vine, MLG memes and overall modern-style memes have now taken over.

1. 2011 - 2012 school year. Smartphones are mainstream, CN "revival" era is in full swing, electropop and indie pop are charting well, etc.
2. 2010 - 2011 school year. Like the above but not as established. This was a transition from modern smartphones(touchscreen ones) being a rare novelty device to becoming common. This was a transition in other aspects like the iraq war ending.
3. 2012 - 2013 school year. Mid 10s influences were creeping in but it still felt mostly early 10s.
4. 2013 - 2014 school year. It felt more like the mid 10s but there was still a leftover early 10s vibe. Pre-Dank Memes. Pre-Trump. 8th gen consoles came out but many people still gamed on 7th gen. Pre-alt right. Pre-Isis. Things didn't get dark until later in 2014. Electropop was gone but the electropop of 2011-2013 sounded almost like EDM anyway. Minecraft was still very popular, in fact probably the height of it's popularity.
5. 2009 - 2010 school year. This period felt about 50/50 between the late 00s and early 10s from what i remember. It doesn't have a strong early 10s feel at all. Esp the "2009" part of the school year. Music is arguably more late 00s leaning. This was when facebook was just starting to get big. Pre-smartphones, pre-tablets, pre-common HD before david cameron got elected(he was prime minister in the UK for the majority of the 2010s), still some fashion holdovers i think.

Since you're a Brit, perhaps whilst we here in America see the 2010s politically as beginning with Obama's election in 2008-2009, Brits see it beginning in 2010 with David Cameron's election. Similar to how Americans associate the 80s with Reagan, yet Brits associate the 80s with Margaret Thatcher.

The whole Ukraine/Crimea incident happened in the 2013-2014 year, no? Seems like things were starting to turn dark even then. What I remember is that, at least on the internet, that was really the last year before SJW culture really took off, during the whole "Gamergate" incident.

Even politically it still felt far removed from the alt-right/SJW stuff that defined the following decade. Film is arguably the only medium I would agree with that sentiment, and even that’s only because 2008 was when people started taking superhero movies seriously and the MCU started. IMO 2008 is very much a 2000s year, and IMO, the 2010s vibe regarding sociopolitics and internet culture wouldn’t truly begin in my opinion until 2013 with things like Vine, the formation of Black Lives Matter, Netflix introducing original shows like House of Cards, and the Edward Snowden NSA incident.
