When do you think the idea of PS1/N64 games being retro became common? I do remember back in the mid 2000s, when the craze was predominantly fixated on SNES/Genesis era gaming. You did start to see 5th Gen gaming start to get nostalgia, but it wasn’t considered nostalgic yet. I’d say the shift didn’t happen however until the early 2010s. That’s when 90s nostalgia REALLY blew up, especially with the launch of The 90s Are All That block on Nickelodeon. You also started to see lots of YouTubers who grew up on that era like JonTron and Caddicarus making videos. It definitely seemed like the N64/PS1 era blew up in popularity. I’d say that’s when it really took off, as by now, most late 90s kids would’ve been college students at this point, reminiscing about the old days. But what are your thoughts about this? I might also do a thread about PS2/Xbox/GameCube era gaming era as well, AKA my generation.

I still think most retro gaming in 2006 was focused predominantly on NES era gaming. 2006 was when AVGN blew up in popularity, as well as the release of Virtual Console, which I remember people getting excited to replay their favorite NES games. That was also the year New Super Mario Bros came out, which had those commercials that had the original game, and then it became the new game. There was also some fixation too on 16-bit gaming. I think 3D era gaming really blew up around 2008/2009 or so, when people started to become very nostalgic about the late 90s. This was the same era with all those infamous “WHAT HAPPENED TO CARTOON NETWORK” type videos.

Most of it in 2006 was SNES and Genesis (tons of Genesis re releases for ps2,gamecube,xbox) even in 2004 you had these they were everywhere at the time, but NES nostalgia was also a thing (it started in 97 with the first NES emulator being distributed) and grew as 80 nostalgia got big in 2002. In 2006 Sega released Sonic Gems collection a game filled with mostly Sega CD & Sega Saturn (5th gen) games, most people like myself bought that game just for Sonic CD lol In 2006 also off beat video game stores started putting n64 and ps1 games in the "retro" aisle So OP to answer your question, Late 2006 - 2009 period 5th gen systems were seen as retro

I remember as a kid I used to own tons of retro stuff. Capcom Classics Collection with Street Fighter and Final Fight, and a Pac-Man Jakks Pacific set with tons of early 80s Namco games. The Jakks Pacific set is actually NEWER, from 2009, whilst Capcom Classics Collection is from 2005. As I said, you basically had Golden Age Arcade, NES, 16-bit, AND emerging N64/PS1 nostalgia running through the late 2000s. This was just a time where retro gaming as a whole exploded in popularity, especially with the Virtual Console.

Sonic Gems Collection is from 2005, and IMO I think it was released to give people the opportunity to play some of the more obscure Sonic titles, especially since the Sega CD and Saturn were both flops. I doubt after playing it people were all nostalgic about fucking Sonic R. Though you are right about one thing, I remember in the late 2000s, 90s nostalgia blew up online (much like 2000s nostalgia did in the late 2010s). And you started to see people reminisce about the N64 and PS1 days as the good ol times, especially in contrast to the then-modern Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3 era.

Yeah nostalgia in general was a market back then, and people did buy them, back in the mid 2000s NES nostalgia and overall 80s nostalgia def overweighted the 90s 4th generation systems nostalgia. But when we got to 2006 and 2007 and 2008 then you started seeing the pendulum shift a bit. Video game nostalgia in general was huge back then.

Sonic R sucked as well as Sonic the fighters, hell Sonic CD for most of the 2000s was called " The greatest Sonic game ever made" because people never played it...well until 2011's remaster came out and everyone said "oh this is overhyped and not that great lol" many IGN lists listed Sonic CD as the greatest Sonic game ever in the early 2000s it was pretty funny tbh. A game so rare it has to be the best. When Xbox 360 and Ps3 and Wii were all out at the same time in 2006 it gave us even more steps to look back on. We had jumped so much with graphics.

Video game nostalgia is still huge but now we’ve moved onto the late 90s and 2000s. 3D platformers have made a HUGE comeback with Super Mario Odyssey, Crash N-Sane Trilogy, and Spyro Re-Ignited. Super Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy were in Super Mario All-Stars. Games like God of War, Modern Warfare, and Demons Souls have been getting remakes.

I remember it was one of the most multiplayer games on the PS2’s online service

Super Mario Odyssey Crash N-Sane Trilogy Yooka-Laylee A Hat In Time Super Mario 3D All-Stars Sonic Mania Spyro Re-Ignited Trilogy Super Mario Maker 2 I beat the main story of Odyssey ( haven't done the extra star levels) I like it, reminds me of Sunshine and 64, was way easier than 64, Crash N sane is a good remake of the OG games, Yooka have not played but it looks like I would love it because it is former Banjoo Kazooie people, Super Mario 3d allstars, have not played it but I played the OG 64 and Sunshine when they both came out in 1996 and 2002 and loved them both. Sonic Mania never played, it looks too much like a remix and not a new game. Mario Marker 2 have not played.

The graphics are beautiful, including the opening cutscene. It has some of the best levels in Sonic history. Mario Maker 2 is really fun, you can make your own Mario levels. Mario Odyssey has become one of my favorite video games of all time. If you think it’s easy try going through Dark Side or Darker Side. They are NOT easy.
