You could feel it in late August like it felt like a weight was lifted I bet it was so much sigh and relief that the mid 1990s grunge era was over. Ironically I could sense the "weight lifted off the shoulder" feel in 2008 and 2019. Yupp pretty much but more optimistic, I remember Final Fantasy 7 commercials were on tv every 5 min, literally the United States had Playstation fever and Nintendo never recovered the remainder of the 90s lol. Had it not been for Pokemon being a hit Nintendo would be down bad.

Had it not been for Pokemon being a hit Nintendo would be down bad. I was into the Pokemon cartoon shows. My mom got me a Pikachu stuffed animal in the late 1990s, 1998 or 1999. Seems kind of sad how Pokemon was the saving grace of Nintendo. I bet Playstation 1 was all the rage during the late 1990s. It was, so like this is the timeline of what system was considered the best /cool at the time in the 90s until 97 via chatter in the class room
1992 - Sega Genesis 1993 - Sega Genesis 1994 - Sega genesis until Fall 1994 then SNES smoked them with Donkey Kong Country ( everyone started getting DK mania) 1995 - SNES ( Saturn was a botched launch and no one was talking about ps1 at the end of the year) 1996 - Nintendo 64 ( everyone was hyped about Super Mario 64 and Star Wars...like EVERYONE and their dog) 1997 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now this is where it get's interesting, N64 was riding on this hype until about August 97 and PS1 smoked them so bad it's not even funny, these 3 TV ads aired on TV every 6 min when there was an ad break ( and yes the commercials helped perception) Let me just remind you again.. LOL these ads were airing aggressively every commercial break on every TV channel. The tide shifted and PS became a house hold name after this, ask anyone that was around then that got a PS1 and they will tell you Final Fantasy 7 made them buy the system. Nintendo had almost no commercials airing during this time. Maybe Goldeneye thats it. They could not compete... it was a wrap for Nintendo for the rest of the 97-98 school year. Pokemon came out Fall 98 and did save Nintendo, let me repeat the Pokemon franchise SAVED Nintendo lol

Wow that's interesting lol. Wow the PS1 really used TV as an advantage for more sales. It seems as if by late 1997, PS1 became the powerhouse it did. I think you inspired me with an idea for a thread to create. 100% Playstation was apple levels of cool in 1997. Yes Nintendo 64 had some cool games after 97 like Banjo Kazooie, Zelda Ocarina of time & Smash Bros but thats about it really lol. SONY DECIMATED Nintendo in the 5th gen console war, I mean DECIMATED.

I’m not sure if those 1997-2000 PS1 games have aged well outside of final fantasy and a few titles despite being better than n64 at the time . Last time I tried to play tomb raider 1 and crash 2 it felt hard to enjoy. Im kind of sucker for the big box games with weird concepts from 1995-1996 like loaded and po’ed. Also Japanese imports from 1994-1995 like motor toon Grand Prix from 1994:

I really liked the soft rebrand of Sonic in 97 lol, Sega just added green eyes when Dreamcast came out.
I remember seeing these designs when Saturn was out, it was used to sell Sonic R.

The Tomb Raider 2 ad still has that grungy shaky aesthetic of the mid 90s. I guess it wasn't completely gone in 1997, even though I find 1997 to be a very lighthearted and futuristic kind of year.

So many sci-fi movies from that year: Event Horizon, Gattaca, Starship Troopers, Men In Black, The Fifth Element, Contact, Cube. If you're a weeb, you also know this year for the release of End of Evangelion. And aesthetics were changing to match this new vibe as well. Instead of the earth tones, long hair, and grungy, distorted fonts of the mid-90s, it was all about futuristic chrome aesthetics, robotic sounding voices, white backgrounds, colorful and blobby electronics, and objects flying around.

And it would remain that way until emo came in the mid 2000s. That's one major difference between the Gen X 90s and millennial 90s, the hair.

In that video there are so many music video stylings that clash, from the early 90s gears to the blue and white scene where everything looks like a mid 90s warehouse to the late 90s flashy colors and bright huges and y2k sunglasses it's crazy lol But yeah 97 was def the last year long hair on a guy could get a pass, by 98 forget it

Side note but speaking of the millennial 90s, I'd say Independence Day was really the movie that really set up the vibe for it. Sci-fi, alien, and disaster films became way more popular following the release of that film. Things were becoming more high-concept, futuristic, and experimental (culminating in 1999 with The Matrix).
