I'd say the transition to smartphones was in 2010. 2011 and 2012 were identical years to each other. I remember clearly thinking nothing has changed in 2012 compared to 2011. Sure I got a smartphone in late 2012, but I was late to the game. Most people transitioned to having smartphones by 2011.

In 2011 that's when everyone started getting them. Even kids in 5th and 6th grade started using them. It was being talked about in songs as well. Could just be a regional delay though.

I was late because I got one in late 2012. In 2010 a lot of people still had dumb phones, I agree with that. I mean everyone started getting them in 2011. Maybe late 2010 as well there were a few people with them i think but 2011 was the big breakout year where I live.
