This is great, I agree with this (except maybe Scary Movie 1). I also like to add the following films below.
Late Y2K:
• Josie and The Pussycats • Scooby-Doo
Movies that almost can pass as Early 2000s:
• Legally Blonde • The Princess Diaries • Spider-Man • Big Fat Liar

The only thing is the last four movies were released in the early 2000s. I was describing films released in a almost passing in the era/sub era after when it was released.

I understand where your coming from. Maybe not Spider-Man 1 nor Big Fat Liar. But Legally Blonde and The Princess Diaries does almost come across as early 2000s imo.

I should add an early 2000s section or maybe do a thread on that later.

There’s Something About Mary I think is a flat out Y2K film. Sure the movie has that Farrelly Brothers influence characteristic of the 90s. The movie however was a pioneer at the time when it came to the film’s characteristic use of raunchy humor and dick jokes. It’s arguably this movie’s success that paved way for all the gross-out comedies of the Y2K era/early 2000s like American Pie, Van Diesel, and Road Trip. Armageddon on the other hand is the opposite. I think it’s a straight late 90s movie. The movie fits pretty much PERFECTLY in the sci-fi disaster movie mold that was so characteristic of that time. The CGI also looks too piss poor for the Y2K era, the same era that gave us The Matrix, Star Wars 1, and Gladiator.

Can you list the movie(s) that you believe were the quintessential flicks of each sub eras. Late 1990s, Y2K, Early 2000s etc…

Ah pretty much. I was planning on doing the early 2000s this a while back. Totally forgot. Its another one of those things where actually being there makes all the difference. I remember watching grind when it came out with friends, we all thought it was too corporate at the time but in retrospect it still holds up. We need to a mid and late 2000s thread at some point as well.

Def, even tho Grind did suck in retrospect along with The New Guy and Just Married, it's one of those "you had to been there to witness the energy in real time " events

Don't get me started with just married lol, they aired that movie WAY too many times on cable in the the 2000s. You can kind of appreciate them now for what they are even if they weren't the best at the time. I still have a soft spot for early 2000s corniness.

Def, it was the equivalent of watercooler talk back then, like you talked about it first period in class for like a week and thats it lol, I think the fact that in Early 2003 when that Just Married commercial was on (every damn channel aired that ad) it like kicked you in the face to see it. Like you had to see it. Even if the movie looked dumb you saw it anyways because it was the talk of the week. I think in the early 2000s it seemed movie commercials were added at higher frequency then the mid 2000s, the fact that I remember "call me pussy line" is stuck in my head speaks volumes.
