2014 doesn't get talked on here as much. 2014 doesn't seem to get as much love as 2010-2013 or 2015-2016. 2014 was undeniably mid 2010s pop culturally from start to finish. However as 2014 was going on, I couldn't help but notice early 2010s vibes in the first half of that year.
Early Half of 2014 Stick-Outs:
-Cable TV was still going strong.
-7th generation gaming consoles were still played and purchased as 8th generation gaming consoles were still expensive.
-Electro-Pop influence can still be heard in music. A lot of songs that came out could chart well in 2011 or 2012, even 2009 or 2010 to an extent, but not 2016 or 2017 and later.
-Politics wasn't toxic or divided.
-Cancel culture wasn't around and or huge.
-People said whatever was on their mind, since political correctness didn't exist and or wasn't prevalent.
-Great Recession effects still lingered.
-Gas prices were close to $4.
-Streaming wasn't at present levels, just starting to catch on.
-Facebook was still popular with teens.
-People still sported bright neon fashion.
-Skeuomorphism, bold, bright colors and shapes are still prevalent in design, though minimalism and flat design were already around.
-Last trace of people owning phones with physical keyboards, though touch screen smartphones were already the majority.
The second half of 2014 felt more removed from the early 2010s. I sensed some late 2010s vibes taking shape.
Late Half of 2014 Stick-Outs:
-Cable TV starts to decline.
-7th generation gaming consoles are purchased and played less, since 8th generation gaming consoles become slightly more affordable, so people start buying them more.
-Electro-Pop influence on music is mostly gone.
-Politics becomes toxic and divided. Trump considers running for president in 2016.
-Cancel culture starts to grow.
-People afraid to say what was on their mind, since political correctness started to affect politics and culture.
-Great Recession effects no longer lingering as unemployment returns to 2006 levels.
-Gas prices were close to $2.
-Streaming gets more popular, almost at late 2010s to current levels.
-Facebook no longer hip with teens as Vine, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat were or are the sites to be on.
-Less people sported bright neon fashion and more people sported subdued and dark fashion.
-Minimalism, flat, pastel colors overtake skeuomorphism in design.
-Everyone owns a touch-screen smartphone.
Closing Thoughts:
2014 seems underrated, especially the first half, even if it's not my favorite year.
