Most people say 2016 but it had way too many unique things to be the year that best depicts a picture of the entire decade like the pokemon go craze, a new president being elected(this hasn't happened for any other year of the 2010s) and the edgy commentator/drama era of youtube.

I agree. And, 2015 is my favorite year of the 2010s.

Now that you put it this way, 2015 makes sense. It seems like the "5" year is the quentessential year of every decade tbh.

I usually say 2016 is the quintessential year of the 10s usually because it had the most notable or iconic moments/trends of the decade. But in terms of representing the overall theme or blending together all aspects of 2010s culture into one, then I agree 2015 wins in that area. The quintessential school year of the decade is 2015-16

The quintessential school year of the decade is 2015-16 The phenomenon that was pokemon go was a one off thing, nothing else that decade changed the way society functioned for almost half a year. The 2016 election was also something that was a one off thing for that decade(there was a 2012 election but it doesn't compare and the incumbent got predictably re-elected anyway). That's why 2016 is really it's own thing and doesn't represent the rest of the 2010s.

2015-2016 school year totally was the most quintessential 2010s year.

I'd still say Mid 2016 is Quintessential, but 2015 is definitely not too far behind;
I felt a small but noticeable shift in Summer 2015, with the legalization of LGBTQ marriage, 4K TV's, 8th-gen gaming becoming the standard, VR, Windows 10, and Dancehall music... Oh, and the dark effects of Trump running as a presidential candidate, but let's not talk about that... At the same time, Mid 2015 was basically the peak of Mid 2010s culture: Vine was at its peak, so was Hispter, and the optimistic vibe that was shining in the air.
Still, Mid 2015 is the peak of Mid 2010s culture, while 2016 is the peak of the whole 2010s decade
