-Deathcore, crunkcore ( very early 2010s) and post hardcore as well. -Monster energy drink popularity -Weird, edgy and gory/horror graphics almost like trippy punky/skater/emo graphics with loud colors like green, yellow and purple on shirts, jackets and certain shoes popular with skaters, scene and crunkcore kids ( lasted until very early 2010s) -Ringtones and cellphones with flashy cases ( very early) - Arabic head scarfs - V for vendetta masks weird offshoots of black metal, 80s metal and punk peak popularity (to be fair this can be applied the mid 2000s and most of 2010s, but there was a noticeable popularity around this time circa 2006-2011) -Guitar Hero -Cheesy Wii addons

I don’t understand why people claim that these trends weren’t around in the early 2010s, even if they were on their final legs. I don’t get the denial of the late 2000s and early 2010s sharing similarities. Of course they’re not the same era, but it’s not like all those trends died by Friday, January 1, 2010. I recall most of these trends still being prevalent while fading at the same time during my middle school years from late 2010 through early 2012. Almost every guy was drinking Monster energy drinks, sporting long hairstyles and beards. Guitar Hero was played by many students. iPods were still a common way to listen to music. I’ve noticed those fashion trends you listed, still being worn by many students, especially all types of clothing with random and strange imagery, cheesy sayings, skinny jeans of various colors. I still saw students dressing scene. Besides touch screen smartphones, I saw students use sliders and dumb phones with bedazzled cases and custom ringtones. The early 2010s could be the last gasp of the Bling aesthetic. Skeuomorphism was also still around, but I think you touched on that. Humor, TV, music, movies, pop culture, gaming seemed more violent, crass and politically incorrect, less SJW-ish. I noticed those trends to a lesser extent during my early high school years from mid 2012 through early 2014. By then they were close to death.

I noticed those trends to a lesser extent during my early high school years from mid 2012 through early 2014. By then they were close to death. Its great that you remember this so vividly. I think you may have deleted the 2006-2007 post. I think 2007-2008 makes a better early year that shares solid commonalities across the board in a more substantial way. I see 2006-2007 as more of a base year for the late 2000s and a period where some things that were popular around mid 2004-mid 2005 peaked, more than being the earliest period and 04-05 to be the earliest period to have a few things in common with the 2010s. 2007-2008:-While mid 2000s hipster was already a thing, noticeable and somewhat popular by 2004 and was starting to get a lot more mainstream in 2006, 2007-2008 is when you noticed it a lot more and when a few incoming 2010s elements start getting attached to it like the cheesy mustache, bigger beards and fixation with vintage culture and starting to become less less indie rock/film school nerd/fashionista and leaning towards what would blossom later in the following decade. -There were barely any electropop albums in late 2006, 2007-2008 is when you see a solid body of albums -PS3 and Wii really are in full swing popularity in 2007-2008 -Lady Gaga blows up - First year where emo culture feels a tiny bit less popular -First proper year where everyone is on facebook or is pressured to be on it, 2006-2007 is too early, it feels very in your face mainstream in 2007-2008. - You can feel people campaigning and pushing for Obama at some point and new change and there is much more visible presence people pushing more for woman's rights, LGBT rights and gay marriage discussion even its just youtube videos and facebook posts or discussions with friends, you can feel it growing. 2006-2007 liberal was mostly limited to anti US foreign policy discussion and environmentalism and rejecting neo-cons and bush which dates back to 2004. - Peak of classic AVGN and collecting old school games and video game nostagia on the internet and real life is more mainstream than 2006, I can walk into walmart and buy a super mario nes t-shirt in march 2008. -Geek culture really sticks out at this time. Comic Con 2008 gets a lot celebrities this year and mainstream coverage, way more than earlier, making it super mainstream and there is also a reboot/super hero movie industry shift in latter 2007-mid 2008 (Transformers, Iron man, TMNT, Die hard, Dark Knight, Indiana Jones) and collectable figures starts sticking out and appearing in a lot more places compared to earlier. - Minimalist 2010s graphics and fonts and vintage imagery in graphic design that peaks around 2009-12 starts taking off around this time but it isn't isn't in full effect. -Blogging as a money making career and Youtube as a money making career becomes more of a thing but I'm not certain on the start date. -Youtube includes a lot more content, a lot more 360p videos, Youtube becomes like more of place to watch everything, and feels like a place where you can just search just about anything. It didn't feel like that in mid 06-mid 07 If you want the earliest year that has some vague attachment to the 2010s it would 2004-2005 and maybe late 2003, but 2003 is stretching it. 2004-2005 - Graphic design trends like splatter fonts, ink stamps and stencil and apple ads like the ipod one from 2004 are still somewhat used in the very early 2010s - PC gaming from 2004-2005 has more in common with the very early 2010s than the early 2000s. -The smartphones, including numerous models from late 2004-2005, including blackberries before pearl, are in the same boat model/style/feature wise as pre-iphone smartphones, circa 2004-2012 and detached from earlier stoneage ones like 90s to early 2000s models such as blackberries and palm pc that look like glorified calculators. Blackpearl pearl just represented a peak in the popularity of blackberries in 06-2007 which were a step closer to modern smartphones, but all throughout the mid 2000s smartphones were popular, even if they didn't replace regular phones or have the same features, looks as today. -Pop, techno and rock, crunk also shares a lot of features and traceable features with very early 2010s music (lil jon, amy winehouse, M.I.A are just a few ) Music like post-hardcore, metalcore, indie, and scene music which sort of continued from 2004 all the way to late 2009,10,11,12,13, early 14 even if it was winding down/dying or co-existing or ovetaken with exclusive 2010s music -20s/30s nostalgia I think started around this time I think some was left in early 2010s - Modern hipster identity becomes solidified around 2004, even if there still a 2000s indie rock/geek/metrosexual look to it there are still enough features with a similar look to 2010s hipsters, alongside this facial hair starting becoming a thing around this time, and is like a year 0 for early 2010s hipsters. -All 2010s facial hair trends are an extension of the 2004-2005 trend to have scruffy facial hair on the face even if they weren't beards.

Thank you. Sorry I deleted the 2006-2007 post because I thought it wasn’t relevant to the topic. I guess it’s somewhat relevant. I agree that 2006-2007 is the base for the late 2000s, yet it leans mid 2000s culturally. 2007-2008:I recall the cheesy mustache, bigger beards and obsession with vintage blowing up. All of a sudden being a nerd or geek became cool and accepted in contrast to the early 2000s. I think the mid 2000s were a transition for that. Big Bang Theory started airing in 2007-2008 which probably helped. 2008 was the first year I heard of Comic Con. I think rappers started to ditch the macho and gangster persona for a more nerdy and preppy type or maybe that also started happening in the mid 2000s. Environmental issues also came to the forefront. My school made a big deal of it so much that they made us perform about it in a concert. Culture started leaning more liberal, which can be traced back to the mid 2000s. Democrats were in control of both the House and Senate. Bush seemed like a shell of his former self at this point, doesn’t even have a tenth of the respect or high reputation he did from late 2001 through early 2003. Everyone wanted him out. His presidency seemed long in the tooth. I noticed electro-pop music more this year compared to a year earlier. I think 2006 had 2 electro-pop albums, one from Nelly Furtado and one from Justin Timberlake, both with Timbaland productions. Yes Lady Gaga and I believe Katy Perry became popular. Pitbull also got popular. I still heard radios playing rap, pop, r’n’b music from this year as late as 2010-2011, to an extent 2011-2012. To be honest they sounded similar or not far off from each other. 2006-2007 felt transitional between 6th and 7th generation gaming. 2007-2008 was comfortably 7th generation gaming. I think scene was popping up in late 2006 with emo starting to feel played out, but scene didn’t overtake emo until 2007-2008. Myspace still felt like the hip social media site in 2006-2007, even with Facebook opening up to everyone. Facebook felt more like the hip social media site in 2007-2008. I noticed the push for Obama to win, woman's rights, LGBT rights and gay marriage. Even my 4th grade teacher got our class involved, making us do a mock election of which president we’d vote for. AVGN seemed to be everywhere. Nostalgia for classic gaming got big. 1990s nostalgia becomes hard to ignore. Transformers, Iron Man, TMNT, Die Hard, Dark Knight, Indiana Jones were constantly talked about in and out of school. The movies and the happy meal toys were famous. It was hard to ignore. Come to think of it, they were apart of the late 2000s kid culture, even if a lot of kid culture from the late 2000s strikes me as teenybopper-ish. Some or quite a bit of 2010s design aesthetics can be traced back to 2007-2008. Blogging started to become a popular hobby in 2003 according to another online forum, but I think it blew up in 2007-2008. YouTube got more popular due to the reasons you stated. YouTube felt like they entered their peak with anything being possible as the sky was the limit. 2004-2005:This year seemed more relatable compared to earlier years as late as the early 2010s. Some 2004 Apple commercials were still played in the early 2010s. Technology seemed to have gone through a huge leap. You put it nicely. Early 2000s and back phones looked like glorified calculators. This was starting to become less to by 2004-2005. 2010 was probably the last year I saw a Motorolla Razr. 7th generation of handhelds began with the launch of Nintendo DS Lite. I sense the music crossovers with the early 2010s. I heard some music from this year being played on the radio in late 2010-early 2011 and didn’t sound out of place. 20s/30s nostalgia got huge and remained so until the early 2010s. Hipster and beards started to pop out. I noticed liberals backlash against conservatives start to grow. Final Thoughts: 2010s seemed to have built on a lot of the above trends. Hipster could possibly go from late 2004 through early 2014 and maybe Yuccie from late 2014 to 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 or early 2024. Pretty much spot on. Was saying that smartphones which blackberries before pearl (not regular flip phones) in 2004-2005 share the style/family/features as pre iPhone styled smart phones in the late 2000s. Both smartphones and pre smartphones ex palm pc, from 1995-2003 feel primitive and and more glorified calculators with some color screen or odd exceptions. 2007-2008 really feels like a shift year for movies reboots/superhero films. 2003-2006-07 feels quite different. Films like transformers, Iron Man, Indiana Jones, dark night setup up the trend of reboots and style of film you’d see all throughout the 2010s

That was the year the MCU started with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, and the year The Dark Knight came out, which made many take superhero movies seriously.
