I actually really like Justin Timberlake's brand new single a lot. It very much sounds like something people will either love or hate, but good god, it's such an immense breath of fresh air to hear something that actually grooves and challenges the status quo of hollow, energyless Soundcloud trap and algorithm EDM. Between that and the remix "Finesse," I suppose 2018 is off to a surprisingly strong start for me. If only things could stay shaken up like this permanently... Given the mixed opinion of the new single, it will be interesting to see how successful it is on the charts. I think it will become a Top-10 hit. The thing that most intrigued me was the guitar at the beginning of the song. I've noticed that the guitar has featured more prominently in songs over the past 6-12 months, so it's interesting to see the trend continue. I'm not too keen on the rest of the song. I find the vocals to be really annoying and repetitive. Too much trap and EDM dominating the charts. "Gucci Gang" & "Bodak Yellow" are complete trash even though people think they are genuinely good songs. Ed Sheeran has had countless No.1 singles worldwide over the past year and I am absolutely sick of hearing him. "Havana" is good but a little overplayed. 1989>Reputation. I'm so pissed off right now, the charts are absolute trash. Yep, I agree. I think the only reason why Ed Sheeran is so popular, is because of how horrible the rest of the songs on the chart are.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone think Justin Timberlake's new song will become a huge hit later in the year? I know I originally mentioned that I believe it will become a Top-10 hit, but now I have my doubts. Considering how popular EDM and trap still are, the song may be too "different" for it to achieve any resounding success.

For that reason, I hope it does well on the charts. We are in desperate need of a change!

Camila Cabello just released her solo debut album today, and I have to say I’m highly impressed. It delivers all of the potential I saw in her originally but is actually even slightly better than I was expecting. Not only is her voice put to strong use, but the songs are reasonably distinct, melodically effective, and full of smooth, evocative lyrics. She performs great songs with content much more relatable and mature than the lowbrow, for-tweens material she had with Fifth Harmony and with Machine Gun Kelly on “Bad Things.” With her new album, she has fully earned my respect as a modern pop star.

“Finesse (Remix)” debuted at #7 in the UK but only #35 in the US.
“Filthy” entered the UK Singles Chart at #15 but still isn’t on the Hot 100.
“Perfect” is still at #1 in both countries, naturally.

Part of the problem could be that the song wasn't released to American radio stations until January 8th and 9th, days after Billboard began recording song performance for the respective week in question. By contrast, it was on the hit radio in the UK from day one. Regardless, the charts do not reflect how consistently both "Filthy" and "Finesse (Remix)" have been in iTunes' top 10 songs since their release and I guess instead focus more on those batches of people with an intense streaming obsession with Ed Sheeran's generic duet ballad.

Ah ok. I think there is a discrepancy in the Top-40 charts. To me, it doesn't make any sense that both the Top-40 and iTunes charts are based on streaming, yet the two charts can be completely different in some cases. I know more streaming services make up the songs on the Top-40 charts, but there should be parallels between the two. For instance, a couple of months ago, "Walk on Water" by Thirty Seconds of Mars was on the iTunes charts and achieved reasonable success, yet it never even charted within the Top-50 of the Billboard and ARIA Charts.

Well, we're now in the middle of July and if i'm being completely honest, I don't think the mainstream music scene has changed too much at all. I was really hoping that songs such as "Filthy", "Zombie" and "In My Blood" would help spur a change in music, but those songs have seemingly had very little influence on the trajectory of the Top-40 charts.

I'm going to be honest. In terms of pop culture, this year hasn't been very impressive so far. There are still some good songs, but there are fewer songs that I actually liked this year than last year.
This year culturally is pretty boring compared to say 2015.

But I recall you recently saying that you thought 2018 was a good year for music? Either way, I agree with you as 2018 is BORING and has terrible music (mostly).

That's what I used to think. I don't think it's a bad year for music, but I also don't think it's fun or exciting either. 2018 does have some good songs though. Drake's and J. Cole's albums are good IMO. I'll be honest though. Early 2018 did have good music. When mid-2018 came that's when it got a little meh. Still some good songs though.
