I think it's quite depressing that people are so addicted to smartphone devices, that many are simply unable to stop using them while driving. To be honest, I question the effectiveness of driver safety ad campaigns in relation to mobile phone usage. You can fork out millions of dollars of tax payers money to help try and discourage mobile phone usage, but it ultimately doesn't stop people's addiction with using their device. I still see quite a few motorists who use their mobile phone to call someone or to text while they are stopped at traffic signals. The message is obviously not getting through to a lot of people.
I personally believe that more action needs to be done, to address people's addiction with social media and their smartphone devices. Otherwise, people are still just as likely to use their smartphone device while they are driving, despite the fact that so much money is spent on driver safety campaigns. What do you think about this? Are driver safety ad campaigns really effective in reducing mobile phone usage, or do alternative methods in reducing phone usage need to be considered?

I think they are somewhat effective. Unfortunately I can say I was guilty of often using my smartphone while driving, which is quite dangerous. Luckily I don't do this anymore as I know it puts myself and others at risk.

There were plenty of P-Platers from my high school who used their phone while they were driving.

Self driving cars can't come soon enough. True. Although, even in that scenario, it may not stop people from using their smartphones while driving. I guess it just depends on how technology develops over the next few years. The smartphone may even become obsolete in the next 5 years!

My mom has a habit of using her iPhone while driving, but I always grab it out of her hand and say "Don't text while driving" and she'll say "Sorry" but continue the habit. Pretty much everyone in my family except for my older brother has that habit.
I've been in the car with my sister, and she likes to scroll through Instagram pictures when there's a red light. She'll still look up to see if it's gotten green.
As much as I love using my smartphone, I wouldn't want to use it while driving.

Yeah you should really get them out of that habit, my mum usually just hands me her phone when she's driving. It's pretty bad becasue today I drove out to the airport and I saw this lady on her cellphone while she was driving and since she was distracted she pulled out over the curb and crashed into this other car smh

It's good that you're not planning on using your smartphone when you start driving. It can be really easy to lose focus while driving and become distracted. Hopefully your Mum and the rest of your family will one day fall out of the habit and stop using their smartphones when they are in their cars.
