I feel this way about Lady Gaga and Kanye West. They revolutionised their respective genres and they were talented artists who made good music then but on the other hand, in my humble opinion they kind of ruined music since most people that came after them werent as good as making music in the style that they did(autotune, electropop or electro rap/hip-hop) and it mostly sounded like crap. The whole soulless electronic feeling still lingers today. Music will probbaly never go back to pre 2009. If the 2010s has proved anything, it's that autotune and electronic influences are here to stay.

Eh, I think music is going to go through a transformation once the pandemic is over and concerts come back in full swing. People are going to want a new sound when all of this is over. I totally get what you are saying though. I think Lady Gaga peaked too early. Kanye West's issue, in my opinion, is more due to his strange religious/political persona and mental health issues and not a decline in quality.

Amazing how Lady Gaga fell off, people thought she was gonna be the next Britney Spears but 5 years after her debut she was already a non-entity in the Billboard top40 Gaga was the last big superstar imo

I don't feel like a lot of the bigger contemporary popular artists from most of the late 90s to the present have the same iconic quality and continuous peak level creative experimentation/exploration that that they did in 50s to most of the 90s, so yes. Its not to say there wasn't real talent and good music in the late 90s, 2000s and 2010s but many big artists peak quicky, sellout really fast, rely on gimmicks or over cliched elements or don't maintain creative longevity in the same way imo.
You can say that the original punk movement lasted for a few years and the mainstream 90s alternative music did not have the longest lifespan, but groups like the sex pistols, ramones the clash, the damned, the smashing pumpkins, oasis, stone roses, soundgarden and nirvana still have insanely timeless and iconic albums that haven't been matched by anything new imo.
Also, in this regard I don't think late 90s-2010s has produced anything equivalent to the beatles, elvis, the doors, david bowie, rush, eric and rakim B, black sabbath, metallica, slayer, led zeppelin, PIL, the cure, public enemy, tupac, run dmc, the smiths, REM, and suede's albums from past decades. Many artists just don't have that kind of type of top tier groundbreaking creative talent and longterm shelf life and experimentation they once hand, I find it hard to put them in the same equality boat as anything modern (most of the 2000s, 2010s) despite many current underground artists having amazing work, even though many just emulate pre-existing styles or combine them, and despite that a lot of modern pop artists which are talented and have done a lot of good things and a number of who don't fit this description of have some work which can be considered somewhat iconic, I personally enjoy late 90s/early 2000s more than mid 00s to 2010s in this aspect, but there's always room for potential later on and there's always unexplored music which never reached the mainstream or was underrated, even as recent as 5 years ago.

It's funny you talk about originality and creativity and yet come to mention Elvis Presley and Led Zeppelin, both acts relentlessly accused of stealing and copying other artists. Silver lining I 'spose.

Tbh a lot of the souless autotune stuff/souless electronic feeling dates from earlier but I get the gist of what you are saying.

Imo this can still be found in a lot of songs in 2009 and 2010. 2011 onwards i'd say is when EVERYTHING was just soulless trash. Part of it because the electronic autotune shift that started with gaga, kanye west and t-pain in the late 2000s. The modern processed sound still hasn't gone and autotune is here to stay unfortunately.
