2012 being a decade ago does feel crazy, but I feel like if I actually woke up in 2012 tomorrow I'd see the differences more clearly and it'd make more sense.

Yeah, if I woke up in 2012 tomorrow I’d have to get used to NOT wearing a mask first of all, social media wouldn’t be nearly as important anymore, smartphones would be heavier, slower, smaller and devoid of so many modern features (touch/face ID, apple/android pay, iPhones having widgets, bezel-less phones, different colored emojis for different races, most android phones wouldn’t even have emojis, etc.), chunky flat screen TVs would be a thing, no SJW/Alt Right culture, and early 2010s fashion would be egregiously noticeable

Word. There are definite differences between today and 2012, it wouldn't be fair to make it barely different, but its still not that old and is different but not that different. 2002 was very dated in 2012, they felt world's apart. 2012 to 2022 Similarities 98% Up to date iphone smartphones were like today but chunkier and bit lower res but still sharp/good enough for most pictures and social media and the go to phone to get Apps are massive Mobile games are massive Nearly identical LED TVs 80 percent same fashion minus 00s holdovers, hipster cheese, and very dated early/proto mid 2010s fashion. Social media a bit different but mostly the operating the same exact way minus hashtags blowing up, influencers, and Alt right/SJW culture Flat design across things in general was the leading trend even if skeuomorphic and 2000s trends were still used Social Media marketing/campaigning for big corporate brands was a thing and using sm political protest or revolt was a thing LGBT support was increasingly popular with big boost of liberal views on the subject, compared to earlier years even if it isn't exactly 100 percent like mid 2010s, this didn't happen out nowhere in 2014 and 2015 Very very close to the liberal and tech zeitgeist of the mid 2010s Vinyl Records is a trend 2010s film styles 80s/90s nostalgia oriented books, toys, fashion common and easily found in major stores around the country/world Fashion getting more significantly inspired by the 90s around 12/13 Hipster burger restaurants trend still a thing Selfies which have been around for a years prior Lots of traits of hipster fashion and style even though we are past the style being popular Differences: No streaming/Netflix but Youtube, numerous lower res streaming or video movie/series sites, torrents and pirating alongside cable is big. Blu Ray and Dvds have more relevance despite physical movie media feeling like its days are numbered OG 2010s Hipster is popular and is a popular mass movement (tbh for many years after) No Trump, Covid, BLM, SJWs, Metoo, or Alt Right ( you can still remove that stuff even if it was strongly defining certain eras and still have 2010s identity) 7th Gen Gaming No new conservative right Obama No minor late 2000s holdovers Trans topic not being mainstream enough Emo holdovers Smart Tech isn't fully integrated like mid 2010s also it was also attempted in primitive ways in 2010-2012, even if it doesn't mean much Electropop, EDM, Metalcore and leftovers of scene Many people used digital cameras but up to date or somewhat recent dumb or smart phone cameras were good enough for daily pics and facebook pics in 2012. -If you have a smartphone from 2012 and show it to certain groups in 2022, they’ll tease you for it. -What fashion trends are similar to today? You’re talking about basic hoodies and jeans? Look at stores like Zara, F21, and Urban right now, very different from what they are selling in 2012. -I mean, same applies to social media in 2007, you post photos, like, share, and follow friends. -I think you forgot to highlight the presence of smart TVs this year where it was rare to see in 2012. -Mobile games have been a thing since 2009, it’s the norm now. It’s like saying video game consoles a thing in the 90s and it’s not like today. -For most normal people, you are more likely to see skeuomorphic designs in tech in 2012. Even Windows 8 was revolted by many people. Windows XP was more popular than 8 in 2012-13 lol. -Liberal views were very different in 2012 than 2022. We are bot talking about the mid 2010s. There was no pronoun discourse in 2012 for example. -If you have a smartphone from 2012 and show it to certain groups in 2022, they’ll tease you for it. Apple s martphones/modern/10s style smartphones were mainstream in both years, it still a modern apple smartphone, even if dated, I have have mine from 12-13, same exact concept.- What fashion trends are similar to today? You’re talking about basic hoodies and jeans? Look at stores like Zara, F21, and Urban right now, very different from what they are selling in 2012. Not entirely, not basics, casual wear and shit tons of clothing in H&M, Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, are 80 percent similar minus dead trends and incoming new 2020s clothing. I live beside a mall.- I mean, same applies to social media in 2007, you post photos, like, share, and follow friends. Not really facebook was just something to sign up for in 2007 and it was in the middle of blowing up, it wasnt a mandatory and integral part of culture like in early 2010s, and year like 2012, also major channels like twitter were huge and all over media, I remember celebrities talking about maintaining their twitter accounts, and social media was a brand/marketing and political tool starting around that time, nowhere near 2007 standards. -Mobile games have been a thing since 2009, it’s the norm now. It’s like saying video game consoles a thing in the 90s and it’s not like today. lol, mobile games were popular earlier than that I'm talking about 2010s style smartphone and ipad games you would download via app store via smartphones. -For most normal people, you are more likely to see skeuomorphic designs in tech in 2012. Even Windows 8 was revolted by many people. Windows XP was more popular than 8 in 2012-13 lol. No i'm talking about flat design in relation to logos and graphic design, I worked on redesigning logos for brands a lot around that time and the leading trend was flat design in the respect everywhere, not referring to windows design or popular operating systems. On the other hand windows XP lost total support in 2013-2014, it wasn't the ideal operating system to get in 2012 regardless of anything. -Liberal views were very different in 2012 than 2022. We are bot talking about the mid 2010s. There was no pronoun discourse in 2012 for example. Never said anything about pronouns which is why its not the same as today or even the mid 2010s, although it was very close to liberalism that would be solidified in the mid 2010s and is with us today but of course it wasn't exacty there yet as mentioned, by 2012 people were a lot more open/supportive to LGBT support than a few years earlier and quite left leaning/progressive on many subjects.

2012 arguably started the transition into mid 2010s politics with the killing of Trayvon Martin. That led to the mid-2010s to present movement of BLM. Later that year Obama announced his support for gay marriage, as well as Chick-Fil-A I think.
Liberal ideologies were fully mainstream in the mid 2010s, probably the most liberal era I've lived through. Conservative ideologies on certain subjects were fully mainstream by the end of the mid 2010s heading towards late 2010s, so about mid 2015 and 2016. Early 2010s, specifically sometime in 2011 through early 2013 already leaned towards the mid-2010s politically speaking, but not there yet.

I can't even believe it's been that long ago. Sure, the social, political, and musical/pop cultural landscapes have drastically changed (mostly for the worst with COVID), but with the HD quality videos, social media and smartphones gaining steam (although not as advanced as today), and artists such as Taylor Swift, Drake, and Justin Bieber that were popular back then, I guess 2012 doesn't feel that old to me.
What's funny is that many people thought the world was gonna end back in 2012 following the Mayan calendar, and in 2020, we never had more of an existential threat to our lives than COVID.
