The overall pop culture zeitgeist of it was cheesy and trashy but if there's one thing I miss it's 100% the memes. I liked the punchy simpler humor with top text/bottom text and rage comic formats than now where memes try to be all edgy and complex and ironic and meta nowadays. They also feel really repetitive like the meme format where there is an image and the cfaptions are meant to represent things. Doesn't help that throughout the mid 10s they started permeating fully throughout youth culture whereas before you didn't hear or see them all the time outside of the internet. There was way more variety in meme culture back then. Even for one template you had many variations of it like for top text/bottom text you had trollface, awkward penguin, psychopathic wolf, one does not simply, velicorapter etc. Nowadays it's just the same rehashed crap over and over. Nobody: meme is a good example of this.

Maybe it's just where I see them (TikTok). Biggest early 20s memes I can think of were Karen, WAP, the Travis Scott meal, Among Us. I'd rank it early 20s > early 10s >>> late 10s, 20s above 10s because early 10s memes do be kinda corny. I remember the late 10s memes being super edgy/ironic and annoying from about 2015-2019, opposite of the early 10s cheesiness lol but it was a lot worse too. I think TikTok was the change the internet needed in the early 20s, TikTok rap also replaced edgy SoundCloud rappers and changed the landscape of hip hop. 2022 internet be a lot better than 2017 internet.

Tbqh early 20s memes are an improvement over late 10s memes. There are some ones that were really funny when they started getting mainstream like the fast explaining meme and the gigachad enjoyer vs virgin fan meme. There is a subtle improvement whereas late 10s is similar but not as creative and it felt like the same 4 meme formats kept getting recycled over and over back then.

Late 10s was peak ironic humor Yeah, 20s memes have been an improvement and there is a lot more creativity. Late 10s was the dark age of memes though.
