I'm talking boring years coming after an intense year.
2009 was an intense year with the economy at their peak shitty-ness, Obama's inauguration, Chris Brown beating Rihanna, Red One electro-pop exploding, bright and tight fashion taking off, high-profile celebrity deaths like Patrick Swayze and Michael Jackson. 2010 was a boring year, felt like a continuation of 2009, but late 2010 was slightly better.

I think boring years are better than bad years, but 2020-2022 have been both, actually a lot of years are boring and bad. A few that come to mind Boring: 1987-1988, 1995-1996, most of 1998, 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2005-2006, 2010, 2016, 2017-2018, 2020-2022 Bad: 2000-2001, 2005-2006, most of 2007, 2017, 2020-2022 Combo of Boring and Bad: 2000-2001, 2005-2006, 2017, 2020-2022

I think we were so traumatized by the boring culture of 1998 that we became somehow conditioned to like it as way of coping with the boredom lol. Yeah 00-01 is first.

I think the atmosphere and many aspects of 1998 and 1999 tbh was still better than 2000-2001, even if it was similar in a number of ways. Summer 1999 had this special vibe that really shouldn't even be lumped in with 2000-2001.

This is a good way of looking at it, I think they are necessary. We might look at them in retrospect as boring, but at the time they tend to be when the cultural era felt solid and was really gaining its identity. If things ended and moved on to the next too quickly, they would feel like a blur and not be as memorable. Even though we generally view staleness as bad, that in itself still creates the breeding ground for new and exciting things to move in. Sure there can be points where things seem excessively (and maybe unnecessarily) bad, but all are part of the cultural life cycle.

People could literally make an entire film series with the amount of shit that went down in this year. Certainly not a good year by any stretch of the imagination, but definitely not boring in the least.

Give me a boring year over a bad year with crap that triggers my anxiety. John Titor might have thought summer 2001 was boring. It sorta was because this was the first summer I had without cable TV. And my anxiety issues reared it’s ugly head that year. But for some reason I find myself looking back at that time. Probably in a way of “thank god I don’t have to put up with that anymore” kinda way.
