i’m sure we can all agree that 2018 is the best year that represents the late 10s culturally but 2017 and 2019 are very late 10s but with some mid 10s and early 20s elements respectively. which year do you think better represents late 10s culture?

2019 feels like the 2010s coming to an end and paving the way for an early 2020s that we never got...
2017 was in the Trump administration and was also when trap really took off IMO. Nintendo Switch was released and Vine went away, definitely more late 2010s IMO

Unpopular opinion: 2019
2017 still had some influence and leftover trends of the mid-2010's and was still the last full year of the core 2010's, and all of the things that culminated the late 2010's weren't exactly full-bloom (besides soundcloud rap) during that time. 2019 might have some minor early 2020's influence, but that's more late 2010's to me than 2017.

When I think back on the late 10's, I'm going to think of 2019.

2016 was late 10s so 2017 was late 10s too: mostly late 10s.

I changed my vote back to 2019 lol. 2017 still had a lot of mid 2010s influences, especially in technology, music and fashion. I still heard lots of the generic mid 2010s styled teen pop and mid 2010s hipster "rock" music throughout most of 2017 wherever I went. 2017 was the last full core 2010s year. AirPods weren't mainstream in 2017, despite coming out in December 2016. Most or all of 2017 felt like a watered down version of the cultural mid 2010s. 2017 felt long in the tooth, stale and boring, more so than people claim of 2019/2020/2021 to present. I'd rather take summers 1998 or 2001 over summer 2017 lmao. 2017 felt the same as mid 2015 through 2016, similar to late 2014 through early 2015 and slightly like mid 2013 through mid 2014. Most iPhones still had bezels and home buttons, despite the iPhone X coming out that summer or fall. Most 2010s TV shows and movie franchises were still going strong in 2017. Streaming did not outsell cable yet in 2017, despite that being a popular way to consume media. 2019 had some or few influences of today's culture and next to no mid 2010s influences. 2018 was the transition out of the core 2010s, which makes it the quintessential late 2010s year. 2019 was no longer core 2010s. Many 2010s TV shows and movie franchises began to end and or lose steam. AirPods blew up in late 2018, so they were everywhere in 2019. Most iPhones no longer had bezels and home buttons. Streaming surpassed cable in 2019. 2019 was exciting, interesting and a thrill, one of the best years of my life and my favorite 2010s year. 2019 was really as good as the late 2010s got. I felt like every year of late 2010s had mostly the same blend of basic mid 2010s influences with just a few differences. 2018 and 2019 felt less core for sure, and less mid for compared to 2017, but a lot of the more basic mid 2010s influences never really phased out, and were still there all throughout late 2018-2020, I can even say the same about today to a slightly lesser extent.

Agreed and you have a point. The mid 2010s still feel semi-recent and I can still sense some of their influence on today’s pop culture. I’m sure mid 2010s fashions can still be found in malls. New stores that are opening still sport decor straight out of the mid 2010s. The more I think about the extent of mid influences on a year. There were definitely some mid 00s holders in late 2009 to 2013 or so. Emo cuts, casual fashion, tech to some degree, some music feels loosely connected, some trends are still on going. in late 2004-2005 to some extent early 06, eye brow and lip piercing trend, things like big baggy pants, tribal tattoos, tie dye shirts, baggy band shirts, checkered formal button up shirts, basic hand me down clothing being okay to wear, gangsta rap aesthetics. As late as 1994-1995 and 1996 things like pony tails on guys, some funky zig zag pattern design is still around, Fanny packs, long hair in the back of the head like Gibson in lethal weapon haircut, round metallic glasses frames, tucked in clothing, toy packaging and color palettes in packaging toys, food brands, and there were definitely some minor mid 80s or mid to late 80s and core 80s holdovers

Years like 2005 and 2006 still felt semi-recent to me in 2012. In the early 2010s, I still heard plenty of mid and late 2000s music. Tbh, some of them didn’t sound that out of place alongside the early 2010s hits at the time. I’ve also noticed some connections with fashion and technology. I may have seen a few kids with flip phones, but I mostly saw Blackberry Pearls or slider phones. I remember hanging out with a group of emo girls once in middle school, which would have to be between late 2010 through early 2012. I still saw them dressing that way into 2013 and even 2014. Looking at some pictures from 2004 and 2005, I’ve noticed that the clothing was baggy. I could also sense the gangsta rap aesthetics. I’ve read on another online forum how hip hop in 2004 and 2005, maybe 2006 to an extent still seemed connected to 1998 and 1999. Interesting to know that the cultural mid 1990s still had minor connections with the mid to late or core 1980s. The jazz design cafe cups seemed to still be around in the early 2000s, which I think started in the 1980s. I meant rat tails were still around in 1994-1995 and 1996. There were definite minor mid 90s influences were still in in the earlier part of the mid 2000s.

2019 isn't a core 2010s year in any way. You could even argue it's an early '20s year since the Coronavirus was around (that's why it's called Covid-19, for 2019) and new decade artists like Billie Eilish started popping up, music started to shift and trends started to move away and in the complete opposite direction from the 2010s. New shows like The Mandolorean launched, new streaming platforms, Tik Tok started exploding, etc. I think there were even more changes I just can't think of them at this moment.

2017 is typical late 2010s, 2019 is more of a unique finale year.
