You'd get creepy, dangerous men who would stare at young girls as they are in the toilet. That's what would happen. Prove it. You don't need proof. When you consider how many pedophiles are out there, it's bound to happen.

Vermont has had unisex restrooms signed into law for 6 months now... no pedophile cases to be found. You're gonna rule something out of the realm of possibility simply because it hasn't happened yet?

Personally I just wish all bathrooms were singles. I know that isn’t always possible infrastructure wise, but I choose them whenever available. I’ve had plenty of women make me uncomfortable in the bathroom as it is, and my dad was just telling me about a female custodian in the bathroom while he was using the urinal the other day. While indeed intentionally mixed bathrooms wouldn’t make things better, I’m not gonna act like it isn’t already weird.
That said, the whole issue of trans people using whatever bathroom they want doesn’t bother me. If someone is going to abuse that and go hang out in a bathroom to be a creep, well, I imagine they’re probably just going to do it anyway.

It's as if people lose their sense of hygiene the moment they open the toilet door. The males toilets in fast-food outlets and public parks are, more often than not, absolutely clogged and have pee on the seats. I just don't understand how people can be so unhygienic.

I like using the toilet and the showers at my gym so I don't have to clean my toilet/bathtub at home I usually go in the early morning (like 5AM) so they're usually already clean and I'm the first one using them for the day

I have “pee shyness” or “bashful bladder” (it’s a real thing lol I didn’t name it) so basically I can’t go if I’m too nervous. And it happens a lot. There are a lot of things women could do to make me uncomfortable, but the worst is when they talk about you. Once I was using the middle stall of three (not by choice) and two women came in and used the stall to other side. They kept their conversation going, eventually about the “stranger” in the middle who was quietly listening. They went on very rudely, “Say something stranger! Hey stranger what’s your name? What kinds of shoes are those?” Just random statements but it was sarcastic and condescending. Particularly embarrassing when I was in there for a while feeling pretty ill. These weren’t young women either, at least 50. If people could just mind their own business we wouldn’t have half the problems that we do.

That's the type of behaviour I would expect from immature high school kids, not two women in their 50s. They really should have known better. Obviously I don't know this from my own personal experience of using public toilets, but from what I've heard, it seems like that type of behaviour is a common occurrence in female public toilets. I can remember my Mum describing something similar to that when she has been in the same amenities with other women.

I can remember my Mum describing something similar to that when she has been in the same amenities with other women. It basically stems from them being self centered. They think it’s their bathroom. I have had the door pushed right open many times. Once the woman kept staring at me full frontal nude, with my reflection right in the vanity mirror and I had to go walk up in the large handicapped stall to shut it myself. Sometimes the locks are difficult to fully slide in, sometimes they’re easy to break. I always check for feet or knock. But please at least apologize, please react quickly.

Which is strange, because I can't say that I have ever observed similar behaviour in the men's toilet. I've never had the cubicle pushed open or unlocked by another person. I guess it's just the case of running into the wrong people at the wrong time, unfortunately.

To answer the original question I think we can have men's bathrooms, women's bathrooms and neutral bathrooms. That way if men or women are worried about creeps etc, they can just stick to the same bathrooms everyone has been using all along. Those who do need a separate bathroom can use the neutral one.
It's not going to solve violence against transgender people in public bathrooms, but that's another thing. Seems most people are more concerned about having to use one big communal bathroom. Nope, just because there's a neutral bathroom doesn't mean we are getting rid of men's and women's bathrooms.

In newer construction I've been noticing single "family" handicapped bathrooms in addition to men's and women's. I think it's the way to go because it covers a lot of bases. Plus one or two will typically suffice, since there won't be comparatively as many people needing accommodations.

Gender neutral bathrooms are popping up all over the place in Canada (and they're the fully equipped with ones with multiple stalls and sinks, not the single-occupancy ones). Society hasn't collapsed and anarchy hasn't ensued... yet. I feel like we're leading the way again just like we did with gay marriage. In 10 years time, gender neutral bathrooms will probably sound like the most banal thing in the world. 50 years from now people will look back on our moral panic over gender neutral bathrooms and think we're idiots.

I'm really hoping that here in the US, we'll keep bathrooms sex segregated because I prefer it that way.

I don’t see the US having gender neutral bathrooms anytime soon. I just don't think there is enough transgenders to really make it a huge problem. I mean, aren't they like only 0.6% of the US population? The vast majority of us are ok with sex segregated bathrooms, and I want to keep it that way. I'll admit, I think my opinion about transgenders in the unpopular opinion thread was a bit of a stretch. It really should be up to the transgender IMO. My feelings are still mixed though.
