Not "which year best represents each decade", but rather the year you'd end up with if you boiled down all the common stereotypes of a decade into one. These would be my picks.
1960s: 1969. Woodstock, Moon landing, Abbey Road, psychedelia.
1970s: 1977. Disco, Saturday Night Fever, punk, Jimmy Carter.
1980s: 1986. NES, Transformers, home computers and DOS computers, flashy neon aesthetics, John Hughes.
1990s: 1994. The Lion King, grunge, Nicktoons, Beavis and Butthead, The Simpsons, Jim Carrey, Classic Sonic, SNES games.
2000s: 2007. MySpace, emo, old YouTube, DVDs, iPods, Windows XP, PS2 games, Wii games, Flash games, AMVs, anime and anime-style cartoons (i.e. Avatar), skeumorphism.
2010s: 2017. Politics in pop culture, constant protests, Donald Trump, MeToo, fidget spinners, flat design, Rick and Morty, The Emoji Movie.

Only going to speak for the years I was alive to better put things into perspective ( I was alive in the 80s but have like no memory of that decade) 1990s: 1994 ( around the time frame Donkey Kong Country came out) 2000s: 2005 ( timeframe: Summertime, Emo running rampant, Myspace reaching heights, San Andreas and Halo 2 all the rage) 2010s: 2016 ( Around June/July when Pokemon Go was going nuts)

1950s: 1956 1960s: 1969 1970s: 1976 1980s: 1985 1990s: 1995 2000s: 2005 2010s: 2016 1956 is way too early to be the 50s stereotype. When most think "50s" they think of Cold War tensions, Leave it to Beaver, and rock n roll. 1958 would be a better pick since that's when rock n roll peaked.

Woodstock, Moon landing, Abbey Road, psychedelia. I love mod fashion, and it's definitely the thing I associate the most when I think about the swingin' sixties, but 1969 was way too late for that. Mod was already on its way out by then, with bowlcuts and sprayed hair pushed on the wayside in favor of natural long hair and beards, and early 70s fashions in general were starting to take over. Plus Martin Luther King Jr., a very important figure in the Civil Rights movement, had been killed by then. I personally would rather pick 1967, you already had things like hippies and psychedelia and the Civil Rights movement having yet to reach its peak of conflict, while fashion was still purely 60s. Plus Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is definitely more of a late 60s album than Abbey Road which actually predicts a few trends of the early 70s.

2005 is like the universal 2000s year also 2000s first half: 2002 and 2000s second half: 2007 I’d say 2002 or 2003 for the first half and 2008 for the second half.

In regards to the former, I actually don’t think the hippie counterculture is that representative of the 1960s as people would suggest, since although it first became popular between 1966-1969, it wasn’t until the early 70s when it became integrated into mainstream culture.

I actually agree, however, we’re not talking about which year best represents the decade, we’re dealing with stereotypes, plain and simple. Most random people on the street as well as Hollywood generally think of hippies smoking weed and listening to the Beatles when thinking of the 60s. Likewise, most people, the first thing they think of when they think of the 70s will think of disco. I have different answers for which years actually best represent each decade, but that’s a topic for another time.

Don't forget Led Zeppelin released their first two albums, and David Bowie and the Jackson 5 also made their debuts. New TV shows as well, such as Scooby Doo, Sesame Street and The Brady Brunch, all of which are more aligned with the 70s premiered on TV.
