This is something I've known for a while, and I know people will argue for this being decadeology, but this is just my honest on how I feel each decade progressed in terms of the vibe.
Late 80s/Early 90s transition (1990): Mostly the culture of the 90s has yet to truly come in, yet at the same time, core 80s culture is pretty much dead. Many distinct and unique cultural elements that are not found in either the core 80s or core 90s. Is generally associated more with the previous decade. The overall vibe is very glossy and manufactured. A widely hated subgenre of metal is popular (hair metal). Very cheesy in terms of pop culture.
Y2K era (2000): Mostly the culture of the 00s has yet to truly come in, yet at the same time, core 90s culture is pretty much dead. Many distinct and unique cultural elements that are not found in either the core 90s or core 00s. Is generally associated more with the previous decade. The overall vibe is very glossy and manufactured. A widely hated subgenre of metal is popular (nu metal). Very cheesy in terms of pop culture.
Early 90s (1991-1993): The 90s is generally said to "truly" begin in 1991. It begins with a major political event that causes a massive shift in international politics (end of the Cold War). Likewise, the pop culture shifts dramatically, gradually getting edgier. Angsty rock is popular (grunge).
Early 00s (2001-2003): The 00s is generally said to "truly" begin in 2001. It begins with a major political event that causes a massive shift in international politics (9/11). Likewise, the pop culture shifts dramatically, gradually getting edgier. Angsty rock is popular (nu metal/post-grunge).
Mid 90s (1994-1996): The quintessential part of the decade. Has a very dark and edgy vibe. Hip-hop is the most popular genre of music, with gangsta rap being popular.
Mid 00s (1994-1996): The quintessential part of the decade. Has a very dark and edgy vibe. Hip-hop is the most popular genre of music, with gangsta rap being popular.
Late 90s (1997-1998): Backlash against dark and edgy culture occurs resulting in a more vibrant and upbeat vibe in pop culture. Party-centric music is popular, and will continue to be in the next era. Major technological changes occur that change the way people live their lives. Core culture is declining but not dead yet. Teen-centric pop becomes popular.
Late 00s (2007-2008): Backlash against dark and edgy culture occurs resulting in a more vibrant and upbeat vibe in pop culture. Party-centric music is popular, and will continue to be in the next era. Major technological changes occur that change the way people live their lives. Core culture is declining but not dead yet. Teen-centric pop becomes popular.
Y2K era (1999): Core culture is now dead, and the culture of the next decade is rapidly coming in but not established yet. Technologically and aesthetically still part of the previous decade. Pop culture has a very lighthearted vibe.
Electropop era (2009): Core culture is now dead, and the culture of the next decade is rapidly coming in but not established yet. Technologically and aesthetically still part of the previous decade. Pop culture has a very lighthearted vibe.
