Yeah, you heard me, this has to be my least favorite year for movies ever, even worse than 2017, and it perfectly embodies that absolutely trashy, shallow, and corporate culture of the early 2010s. But why, AstroPoug, why do you hate this year for movies? Well, let me tell you
For starters, yes, Harry Potter did end this year, and it was a great finale, basically the Avengers: Endgame of the early 2010s...and that was the only good movie that came out of that year.
What defined this year was really one thing: SEQUELS, SO MANY GODDAMN SEQUELS! And most of them sucked ass.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon was an improvement over Revenge of the Fallen, but that's not saying much, it's still the same Bayformers explosion trashheap as usual (and it SOMEHOW managed to get worse with later films).
Twilight also continued as well, with Breaking Dawn. And like all the other Twilight films, it sucked.
Fast and The Furious turned into a heist franchise during this time. You saw the roots of it in the fourth film, but it was official by this point.
The Smurfs is a nostalgia-exploiting pop culture overdosed piece of shit. Same goes for Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. Hop also came out this year from Illumination. Everyone forgot about this movie, and good thing, because it's lame.
Worst of all, this was the year the unthinkable happened: PIXAR MADE A BAD MOVIE. That's right, this was the year Cars 2 came out. It was essentially made to sell toys, and is unbelievably shallow, which is a damn shame because Pixar is known for surprisingly complex themes in their films (especially their mid-late 2000s films).
There were very few good movies, and MOST of the noteworthy releases were terrible. Maybe it could've been better had Spider-Man 4 come out as planned, but it didn't. Ultimately, this year was the year that made me give up on film. Such a damn shame given how fantastic the early-mid 2000s were in my opinion.
