I would say 2017 is the quintessential modern 10s year. 2018 has a teeny little bit of an overlap with early 20s culture although it's like 90% 10s. The only early 20s influence in 2018 was from like late 2018 and it was totally overshadowed by predominant late 2010s culture and even some remaining mid 2010s influences that pretty much all died the following year.

Fortnite's levels of popularity aren't on par with how it was in 2018, when it was completely inescapable. I'd say it's a late 2010s game full stop. For me, the early 2020s influences begin with TikTok's breakthrough, plain and simple.

classic 2010s school years: 2009-10 (debatable) 2010-11 2011-12 2012-13 2013-14 2014-15
modern 2010s school years: 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19
2015-16 is the transition from classic to modern: - Obama’s last full school year as president - Last full school year of vine and classic instagram logo - This school year, along with 2016-17, is part of the transition from millennial youth culture to gen z youth culture (the first gen z school year imo is 2017-18) - The 2016 election cycle began this year - Flat iphones (iphone 6 and beyond) were the majority this school year unlike just a year before when the iphone 6 was new and most people still had the small rectangular iphones - The MCU began to peak with Captain America: Civil War and would continue to peak in the late 10s
I think the classic 10s are defined by: - Obama being president - A time before politics got really decisive - Pre cancel culture, SJW, Alt Right, and activist culture (BLM, Gun Laws, MeToo) - Millennial youth culture - Before trap and soundcloud rap culture became fully mainstream - Early stages of the MCU (or pre-Tom Holland as spider-man in the mcu) - Streaming just starting to gain popularity and not being more popular than cable yet - Mostly 8th gen gaming - Before most videos and media were shot in 4K - Hipsters still being popular - App culture being a novelty (and games like angry birds, flappy bird, and fruit ninja) - Electropop mostly being popular - Upbeat and carefree music and pop culture - social media before ads - Golden age youtube (smosh, pewdiepie, nigahiga, ray william johnson) - Swag era - Tumblr

I think 2018 is also very modern 2010s. The only reason why I didn't go for it was because it felt a little calmer than 2017 (though that's not saying much LMAO) and TikTok launched that year. I disagree at least in terms of actual events that happened. The first half felt darker than 2017, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt with the second half. 2018-19' felt a lot more light-hearted, a lot like 2016-17', despite the election craziness. I said it wasn't much calmer than 2017. 2018 was characterized by the infamous Parkland high school shooting. However, 2017 had the Las Vegas shooting which is still the deadliest mass shooting in US history. Combine that with the largest single-day protest, and other horrible attacks like the Manchester bombing, and that's where I say it's the most tumultuous year of the 2010s and the most tumultuous I've experienced...until 2020.

It's mostly a late 10s thing but it was still popular during one year of the early 20s so there is that tie between 2018 and 2020 with fortnite. Also it was still very popular in 2020 even if it was past its peak. It only started dying out around autumn iirc. But don't get me wrong. 2018 was 99% a 10s year, it's just 2017 has even less ties to the 20s whilst also being completely seperate from the classic 10s.

2014-2015 was when activist culture like BLM really took off, and you can trace activism culture all the way back to 2011-2012 with things like Trayvon Martin being shot, the Occupy Wall Street protests, and the Sandy Hook shooting. If your really want a pre 2010s activism era, you would have to go back to like 2008, 2009, 2010. Also, I think you meant to say mostly 7th gen gaming for the classic 2010s And goddamn bruh I miss pre-ad social media.

That's when I knew things shifted DRAMATICALLY. The late 2010s literally started perfectly on time.

By late 2017, the mid 2010's vibe was pretty much gone. Still core 2010's but safely in the late 2010's. I think the last sign was either in early or mid 2017. I was thinking about a few mid 2010s influences like Musical.ly still being a thing and shows like Game of Thrones still being around (as that show seemed to have peaked in the mid 2010s).

Fortnite's popularity was strictly a late 2010's trend. It started to die throughout 2018. Its peak was winter/spring 2018. EVERYONE was playing it. 2020 might have been another growth period but it doesn't come close to the peak that it had in 2018. But technically, Fortnite is ongoing, as a late 2010s onward game but its peak was obviously 2018ish.
