You probably saw a list similar to this on PerC, but that list covered epochs, not individual years.
What are your top 10 years in music?
Only post videos for #1.
Here's my list;
#10 - 1977
It was in this year when Queen would release the album "News of the World", containing fan favorite sports anthems "We Are the Champions" and "We Will Rock You". Punk music cemented itself in mainstream culture with the release of "Rocket to Russia" from The Ramones and "Never Mind The Bollucks, Here's the Sex Pistols" from the Sex Pistols. Fleetwood Mac would release "Rumours", which would go on to become one of the most successful albums of all time. Bob Marley & The Wailers would release "Exodus", an album containing the hit "Three Little Birds".
#9 - 1964
If there's any year that saw a revolution for the entire music industry, it's this one. This year saw rock music transform from a fad into the juggernaut of a music genre we know it as today with the release of "A Hard Days Night" from The Beatles, "12 X 5" from the Rolling Stones, and the single "You Really Got Me" from the Kinks, this was also known as The British Invasion. This year also saw the release of albums such as "I Walk the Line" from Johnny Cash, "The Times They Are a-Changing" from Bob Dylan, and "Folk Singer" from Muddy Waters.
#8 - 1973
This year saw the debut of Aerosmith and Lynyrd Skynyrd with self-titled albums containing the smash hits "Dream On" and "Free Bird" respectively. Pink Floyd would release "The Dark Side of the Moon", which is now the third best selling album of all time, and Elton John would release the phenomenal album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". Motown would see the release of Stevie Wonder's "Innervisions", as well as the release of everyone's favorite sex anthem, "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye.
#7 - 1971
All three bands of the Holy Trinity of Hard Rock & Heavy Metal, aka Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin, released stellar albums in this year, Zeppelin's album would even contain the masterpiece, "Stairway to Heaven". David Bowie would release the critically acclaimed album, "Hunky Dory". Country and folk legend John Denver would release the hit single "Take Me Home Country Roads". Motown would see the release of the hit single "Just My Imagination" from the Temptations.
#6 - 2003
This was a great year for alternative rock, as it would see the release of albums such as "Fallen" from Evanescence, "Meteora" from Linkin Park, and self titled albums from Finger Eleven and Three Days Grace. This is also the year when crunk broke into the mainstream with Lil Jon's "Get Low" and Murphy Lee's "Shake Ya Tailfeather". Pop-punk saw the release of albums "Ocean Avenue" from YellowCard and a self titled album from Blink 182, and this is also when Fountains of Wayne would release MILF anthem "Stacy's Mom" and when The White Stripes would release sports anthem "Seven Nation Army".
#5 - 1994
Yeah yeah, this is the year Kurt Cobain died and Justin Bieber was born, so what? This is also the year that saw the debut of rappers Nas and Notorious BIG with the albums "Illmatic" and "Ready to Die" respectively, as well as when Nate Dogg and Warren G would release the G-Funk cult classic "Regulate". This is also when The Beastie Boys released "Ill Communication", Soundgarden released "Superunknown", Alice In Chains released "Jar of Flies", Nine Inch Nails would release "The Downward Spiral", and The Cranberries would release "No Need to Argue". So can we all just forget about who died and who was born this year?
#4 - 1988
This year saw the music scene change for good when NWA released the infamous "Straight Outta Compton", which brought gangsta rap to the mainstream and launched the careers of Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube. This is also when glam metal was reaching an apex with the release of singles such as "Sweet Child O' Mine" from Guns N Roses, "Bad Medicine" from Bon Jovi, and "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" from Poison, as well as saw the release of metal albums "And Justice For All" from Metallica and "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" from Iron Maiden. This year also saw the Beach Boys make a comeback with "Kokomo", the perfect paradise song.
#3 - 1969
This year ranked first on WatchMojo.com and Toptenz, so it had to be somewhere in the Top 5. This year saw the release of rock albums such as "Abbey Road" from The Beatles, "Led Zeppelin II" from Led Zeppelin, "Tommy" from The Who, and "Willy and the Poor Boys" from Creedence Clearwater Revival, as well as the genre pivoting to a harder and more powerful sound. This year would also see the release of albums "Nashville Skyline" from Bob Dylan and "At San Quentin" from Johnny Cash. Motown would see the release of "Track of My Tears" from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, and Frank Sinatra would release the hit song "My Way".
#2 - 1983
This was a miraculous year for metal music. This is when thrash metal made a debut with albums from Metallica and Slayer, and this year would also see the release of albums such as "Piece in Mind" from Iron Maiden and "Pyromania" from Def Leppard. Elton John would release the album "Too Low for Zero", his most successful album of the '80s. Country legend Kenny Rogers would release the album "Eyes That See in the Dark". Most notably in this year though was the release of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" music video and the first moonwalk, which helped shoot the pop singer as well as MTV into the stratosphere.
#1 - 1991
You saw this coming if you saw my list on PerC. There's actually a Houston Press article which helps explain why 1991 is such a phenomenal year in music;
