The highlights of the year are Jake and Logan Paul, The Emoji Movie, Donald Trump's inauguration, Despacito, and musical.ly, + Lil Pump's Gucci Gang. Well, thanks for reminding me of how much this year sucked, and there are WAY more sucky things about the year. This really was the year of shit (until 2020 happened).

On a side note, remember all the memes people made relating to Despacito in the late 2010s? Remember "Despacito 2"?

Thank you for making this thread OP. So happy that someone else appreciates 2017. 2017 was unique since it was a 100% late 2010s year but actually the last core year of the 2010s (core and mid are different). I liked the year. The pop culture was very vibrant, especially the first half and the summer. And it was nice in my personal life too. The Chainsmokers were huge that year.
2017 was also a really good year for music in its first half. It didn't last long but the first half of 2017 had awesome music

That's the most surpising year difference to me, 2017 being half a decade old. The pop culture seems like yesterday even if it feels kind of distant in regards to my personal life.

I actually didn't care for 2017 pop culture after being sorely delusioned by the badness of 2016, and looking back I don't really like that year very much for popular music. But I will post some songs I do appreciate from it in this thread just to change things up a bit.
Didn't really care for this when it came out (especially after being blown away by "Rather Be") but I appreciate it more as time goes on. I just think Zara Larsson's vocals both lack restrain and are a bit flat, which hurts this song. But beyond that, I have to admit the melody is really pretty and it's an interesting mix of tropical house and symphonic pop.

Beyond battle royale games being more popular in 2018, you also had things like TikTok and Mr Beast becoming things. New movies like Into the Spider-Verse pushing the envelope for film, Avengers: Infinity War showing how the Infinity Saga was about to come to an end, shows like Adventure Time coming to an end. 2017 and 2018 do have similarities, but as somebody who experienced both, 2017 felt a lot more in spirit with the 2010s than 2018 did. I mean, the fucking Emoji Movie came out in 2017, whereas 2018 and 2019 had nothing comparable.

I for one didn't notice it or didn't see it enough times to recall noticing it in late 2018. Either way, it's a reach since it was still kind of niche back then. It didn't properly blow up until spring 2019 at the very least and didn't become ubiquitous until late 2019 or early 2020. Instagram was still by large the dominant social media. TikTok was merely a blip in comparison. >Mr Beast I saw him on the front page of YT as early as late 2016. >Avengers: Infinity War Fair point. Even still superhero movies are a strong late 10s trend so it wasn't like a new trendsetter or anything. There's always lots of changes between years but 2018 is one of the least distinct years from it's predecessors in the 2010s imo. Spring 2018 felt like a half shift with avengers infinity war, fortnite and mumble rap becoming more popualr but that's pretty much it. Apart from that it's just generic late 10s stuff.

TikTok may have started to get noticed then in Q4 2018 depending on your region but it didn't explode in 2018. 2019 is the big breakout year for tiktok. Hell, even in the first half of the year instagram overshadowed it, it wasn't until late 2019/early 2020 when it had become ubiquitous for teens. And that video isn't doing your case any good, it only has like 150'000 youtube views.

If you don't remember it that's too bad I don't care And, dude, that "hit or miss" meme was a huge meme in late 2018, like, the biggest meme on the internet from a while That's it, I'm convinced you live under a rock
