As in you look at the vibe of each decade, when did we truly enter it, gaming-wise? Here are my opinions.
1970s Began with the release of Pong in late 1972, and ended with the release of Space Invaders in late 1978.
1980s Began with the release of Space Invaders in late 1978, and ended with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog and SNES in mid 1991.
1990s Began with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog and SNES in mid 1991, and ended with the release of Grand Theft Auto 3, the Microsoft Xbox, and Halo in late 2001
2000s Began with the release of Grand Theft Auto 3, the Microsoft Xbox, and Halo in late 2001 and ended with the release of Minecraft and popularization of mobile games in 2011
2010s Began with the release of Minecraft and popularization of mobile games in 2011 and ended with the release of the PlayStation 5, popularization of Among Us, and launch of Google Stadia in 2019/2020.

2000s: Began in very late 2001. PS2, GCN and Xbox are out. There are already generation defining games which have came out like Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2, Devil May Cry, Sonic Adventure 2, Super Smash Bros Melee and Grand Theft Auto: III. It ended around late 2007, 2 years after the release of the 360, 1 year after the release of the PS3 and Wii and after a sea of generation defining games came out that year such as Assassins Creed, Portal, Super Mario Galaxy, Crysis, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Uncharted:Drakes Fortune, etc.
No mans land between the 00s and 10s: 2008 - Late 2013. This period leans far more 10s though, especially 2011-2013.
2010s: It properly began in 2013 when 8th gen consoles came out, FPS games started dying down in popularity(which could be attributed to COD:Ghosts shitting the bed), games became more colourful, games started steering more towards linear cinematic survival with The Last of Us. Pokemon X/Y came out which is probably the biggest shift ever in a mainline pokemon game. GTA V came out. Minecraft became basically ubiquitous. E3 2013 showed us lots of exciting new games with next gen graphics like Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts 3, Super Smash Bros 4, etc. I don't think it has ended yet despite the next gen consoles being out. No next gen games are being made and not many people are able to get their hands on one due to the transistor shortage.
You could also argue the 10s gaming wise started way earlier than 2013 but it was a very transitional year for gaming whereas before each year after 2007 was sort of like a gradual transition towards the 2010s gaming zeitgeist.

In 2008 I distinctly remember people didn't play mobile games and instead played PSP and Nintendo DS, people went to Gamestop to buy games, lets players weren't a thing yet, and indie games weren't popular yet. Sounds way more 2000s than 2010s. I think 2012 is the first full-fledged 2010s year for gaming. Not only was Minecraft huge, and YouTubers like PewDiePie were becoming very popular, but you also had defining games like The Walking Dead and Slender come out. Halo was now being produced by 343, and Halo 4 wasn't on par with any of the previous Halo titles. The Wii was completely irrelevant and Nintendo had entered a dark age. EVERYBODY was on their fucking phone playing games.

One thing to note that Nightmarefarm got incorrect is the 6th generation ended abruptly as soon as PS3 and Wii came out, yes there was God of War but got 0% publicity at all. PSP was SUPER popular ( I had one) from 05-08, DS as well. When we cross into early 2009 you see more mobile games starting to take overhandheld console hype. I think nightmare may have not been able to get a PS3 Wii or Xbox 360 at the time and most likely continued using their PS2/Xbox/Gamecube.

Yeah, and in 2009, you also started to see Facebook games like Farmville coming out, so 2009 definitely saw the decline of the 2000s gaming vibe. Early 7th gen stuff (2006-2008) to me is still very 2000s. I think 2009-2011 is the 00s/10s transition no man's land.

Console gaming is much more relevant. Mobile gaming is it's own scene. Also 7th gen was more 10s than 00s. It wasn't the average generational leap with a graphics bump and some new features. It has more in common with 8th gen(which is purely a 10s gaming generation) than 6th gen(purely 00s gaming gen).

I'd say for the 2000s it was the release of the ps2 on 2000 In theory yes but not one could even pick up a system then and it had horrible games until the next fall, PS1 had Smackdown ! 2, Tony Hawk 2 to hold it over that Fall 2000 season as well as the new "shittier slim ps1" N64 had No Mercy,Tony Hawk 2, Conker etc. It was kind of like when 360 came out and yet the 7th gen didn't really kick off just yet

Prior to that, you still had collect-a-thon platformers, JRPGs, and survival horror games dominating like they did in the 5th gen. But after 2001, it was all about FPSes and open world crime games.
