This was an old thread on another forum (the last post in the thread was made almost 12 years ago) and I thought it was quite interesting, so I decided to make a thread based on it on Popedia. In your opinion, which year was more culturally related to the 1980s; 1979 or 1990?
I believe 1990 is more culturally related to the '80s than 1979. While new-wave may have become a popular genre in 1979, it was still primarily a '70s cultural year.

Overall, 1990 was more 80s because the fashion, the rock music, and the biggest television shows were a lot more tied to typical 80s culture than most of 1979. Even though you could argue that the 80s culturally started in the UK in mid-1979, thanks to Thatcher becoming the Prime Minister and synthpop/new wave blowing up, the general atmosphere of that year still seemed rather Gen-Jones and saw many of the most famous disco songs of al time dominate the charts, even with Disco Demolition Night occurring. Even though songs like "Heart of Glass," "Pop Muzik," "Fire," and "A Little More Love" sound relatively 80s, most music from 1979 was still pretty comfortably tied to the disco, yacht rock, and arena rock influences of the 70s. Television really hadn't developed an 80s identity in 1979, either, even though a great deal of programs being aired did peak mostly around the early 80s.

I was actually watching videos from 1979 and 1990, and I'd honestly have to go with 1990. 80's culture barely started in 1979, by 1990, 90's culture barely started and there were still plenty of 80s influences left. The fashion was still very 80's IMO

However, if you were to compare the year with 1990, the latter would definitely lean more towards the '80s.

In 1990 the economy was still booming in the US. People still had the me first mentality. Malls were still popular. I feel like as soon as Nirvana got popular is when the 80s died.
